COP28’s activity will take place in two distinct areas adjacent to each other at Expo City Dubai. The Blue Zone, a UNFCCC managed site, will host the formal negotiations across the two weeks of the conference, the country pavilions, presidency events, and hundreds of side events including panel discussions and round tables. On the other hand, the Green Zone, a space managed by the COP28 UAE Presidency, will offer a platform to NGOs, private companies, youth groups, and civil society to showcase innovative solutions, discuss the latest trends in sustainability, and engage in advocacy work. Given the global scope and unprecedented scale of climate change impact, everyone must be at the table to make the transformational progress needed, as Dr Al Jaber stated during the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Forum in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. “We can only succeed if we have an open and constructive dialogue. Let us together create a paradigm shift for tangible progress. And let us remember that reaching net-zero emissions will deliver the biggest market transformation with the greatest economic and human promise since the first industrial revolution,” said Dr Al Jaber. “I urge all parties to help make COP28 a COP of concrete outcomes and practical solutions. We are united by our common goal. We are united by our common humanity. And we look forward to hosting you all in the United Arab Emirates, where together we can ensure sustainable development for this generation and all generations to come”. .

dioxide levels entering the atmosphere. EAD has already planted one million mangrove seeds using drones, as part of a project supporting the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative. Besides its impact on nature, climate change is also creating severe pressure and risks for the agri-food and water systems that underpin human wellbeing. Ironically, these systems are key contributors to climate change: one-third of all human-made GHG emissions come from agri-food systems, and 70 per cent of freshwater consumed worldwide is used for agricultural production. COP28’s Food, Agriculture and Water Day will focus on critical topics such as regenerative agriculture, innovation investment, freshwater conservation, as well as the integrated management of water-food systems. It will also feature a session on the newly launched COP28 Food and Agriculture Agenda, which the UAE created to ensure the world has a platform to discuss food security issues and the financing of food system innovations. COP28 VENUE, A BLUEPRINT FOR SUSTAINABILITY Expo City Dubai, the venue of COP28 and the former venue of Expo 2020, is not coincidentally a destination built to promote sustainability and circularity principles. All buildings at the site have been equipped with renewable energy systems and designed to consume almost 50 per cent less water. Moreover, the city’s layout facilitates car-free living, with public transport routes, autonomous vehicle networks, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian paths.

The COP28 Presidency, in collaboration with the SME Climate Hub and We Mean Business Coalition, has launched a dedicated programme to help small and medium-sized enterprises [SMEs] in the Middle East and North Africa [MENA] implement net-zero strategies.
