Pump It Up

Pump It Up was founded in early 2000, created by the simple vision of moving inflatables out of the backyard and into a controlled indoor recreation center, allowing children to experience inflat- able fun year round. While founded on birthday parties, Pump It Up is open for the business of play. Public events like Open Jump, holiday and seasonal parties, field trips, and fundraising events have made Pump It Up one of the premier spots for children’s recreation.

Pump It Up now has more than 140 loca- tions across the country. Denise Smith, owner of the Pump It Up location in Elkridge, Maryland, with her husband, Tilmon Smith, saw potential in this concept when she decided to buy into the franchise a little more than 10 years ago. In 2005, Smith’s Pump It Up franchise opened in St. John Properties’ Troy Hill Corporate Center. Within a year, the business had already outgrown the space, and Smith knew she needed to expand to keep momentum going. “St. John Properties has been a part of our business since we opened in 2005 and expanded in 2006. They have been instrumental in our continued success,” she said. Pump It Up’s needs were unique from a standard business, requiring a space large enough to house numerous inflatables while also encouraging a fun and inviting atmo- sphere for children. “Our current space is 12,000 square feet — double what we origi- nally started with. The majority of our space is carpeted warehouse with ceiling heights of 18 feet. The warehouse is divided into two separate arenas that house the inflatables. Our space also features two party rooms for guests to get comfortable and partake in the usual birthday fun, such as birthday cake, pizza, etc,” Smith stated. “We normally keep parties to a 50 person maximum, but

with most repairs in our building. We’ve also been very lucky to have our property manager, Keenan Wilkinson, who has been phenomenal with us,” Smith said. Pump It Up recently renewed their lease with St. John Properties, a move Smith said is due to the fantastic service and support Pump It Up receives from St. John Proper- ties. “I know a lot of other franchise owners who would love to have a landlord as help- ful as St. John has been to us,” she said. “I feel that St. John Properties want to see us succeed, and that has meant the world to me.”

the number can go up depending on the circumstances. We do host larger events from time to time, including our annual New Year’s Eve party.” “Since I started in 2004, I’ve had the plea- sure of working with so many different people in all different departments at St. John Properties, and they have all been wonderful. The maintenance department has been instrumental in helping us keep our store looking its best. Our maintenance technician, Kenny Desautles, has been working in our space since we first opened. He goes above and beyond to help us
