In the past 20 years, the number of microbreweries across the United States has climbed to more than 3,000 unique locations, creating countless varieties of beers for consumers to enjoy. Likewise, distilleries and wineries are becoming abundant across the nation, offering tastings and one-of- a-kind spirits, ranging in variety from region to region. Despite the diverse options available, until recently there was a major gap where one option should have been: agave.

Commonly referred to as tequila, a Mexican trademarked product, agave and agave- based products are on the rise with the help and expertise of Sean Smiley, owner of State 38 Distilling in Golden, Colorado. “There are a lot of distilleries that focus on whiskey, vodka or rum but hardly any that focus on agave,” he pointed out. “I believe tequila and agave- based products are on the horizon, and we’re due for a boom.” His agave products include blanco, reposado, añejo, vodka and gin. “Most gins are made from a grain-based alcohol, and we have the only agave-based.” This particular spirit is also the most award- winning product for the distillery.
