A nyone who loves good food loves the Fes- tival of Flavours in Vankleek Hill.This an- nual event, which is a signature fundraiser for the Vankleek Hill Farmers’ Market, has be- come, over the years, a food fan’s delight. Phil Arber, organizer/director for the event, sums it up in one flavourful sentence. “It is a gastronomic, visual, and sensual event,” Arber said. The Festival of Flavours has become more than just one of the most popular local events of the late summer season. It is a foodie mecca with people travelling from all across Eastern Ontario and beyond for a seat at the table. “We will, on a day like today,” Arber said, loo- king out at the sunny mid-August skies, “put more than 6000 people out on the main street. Last year when it was raining, we still had more than 2000 people show up. That is something for a town this size.” The recipe for success began several years ago when Mary Hatz, proprietor of Mary’s Country Kitchen, wanted to promote greater awareness and appreciation for her own native Hungarian cuisine and the culinary offerings of other ethnic groups within the community’s cultural mosaic. The first International Food Festival, as Hatz called it then, had her and five others set up booths on Main Street with little fanfare or pro- motion. The annual festival simmered year after
year, with Arber taking over management in 2006. “Then we blew it to the size it is now,” he said, adding that the festival borrowed an idea in use elsewhere for an extended community dining table. The idea is that anyone who comes to the Festival of Flavours and samples the culinary offerings available will always be able to find a place to sit and eat in relative comfort.
Thus was created the 400-foot Festival Table stretching up and down Main Street, along with a gastronomic explosion in the festival menu. “That one idea changed the whole atmos- phere of the event,” Arber said, adding that fes- tival organizers are now swamped with calls for vendors wanting to set up booths and busi- nesses, big and small, wanting to become corpo- rate sponsors.
Nowadays festival goers can sample almost anything from Himalayan dumplings and Hun- garian goulash to Argentine samozas and Mon- tréal-style smoked meat. “If you have heard of the dish,” Arber said, “it’s likely there. Le samedi 17 septembre, les amateurs de bonnes bines seront attendus toute la journée, puisque de 10 h à 19 h, elles seront distribuées à volonté sur le site. Préparez vos estomacs! Durant la journée, plusieurs activités fami- liales se dérouleront également. Au menu, esca- lade, jeux gonflables, tours de poney, maquillage pour enfants et tours d’hélicoptères seront par- mi les activités proposées.
