Professional Care PT. Shoulder, Elbow, & Wrist Pain

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT It’s hard to imagine our Professional Care PT Patient, Raymond Hayes, without a smile on his face. He is one of the most polite, hardworking and outgoing young men we have had the pleasure to work with. However, just two years ago, life for young Raymond had taken a bit of a scary twist. While celebrating the Easter Holiday with family, then 14-year-old Raymond had suddenly experienced severe low back pain and paralysis. After being rushed to the hospital and following a week’s worth of testing, Raymond was diagnosed with Acute Transverse Myelitis, acute inflammation of

gray and white matter in one or more adjacent spinal cord segments. Some of the common symptoms with this neurological disorder include:

• •

pain and discomfort

• •

weakness in the arms/legs

Following Raymond’s diagnosis, he would spend one month at Stony Brook University Hospital, under the care of Neurologist Dr. Louis Manganas, before being transferred to St. Charles where he would endure several months of intense Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy services, learning to walk again and participate in every-day activities. Now 16 years old, Raymond spends his rehab time with his personal Professional Care Physical Therapist, Dr. Catherine Powell. They work closely together on average, twice a week for several hours a day and we are happy to say that after a year of being home-schooled, Raymond has returned back to class full-time as a Junior to be with his friends at Greenport High School. Raymond is thrilled to be with his peers on a daily basis, and getting back to the everyday routine keeps him motivated. Although his new daily schedule is long and tiring, Raymond stays dedicated to his rehabilitation and continues to smile and keep a positive outlook on life, which is something we admire about him!
