SHOULDER, ELBOW, & WRIST PAIN WHERE IS IT COMING FROM?

Program, Marissa had the opportunity of having clinical rotations in a variety of settings including, inpatient rehabilitation at Island Nursing and Rehab Center, sports rehabilitation at Max Effort Physical Therapy, inpatientRehabilitation atSt.CharlesHospitaland outpatientrehabilitation at Goodman Physical Therapy. She also had the opportunity to attend the APTA Combined Sections Meeting in New Orleans, in February 2018, where she furthered her knowledge and learned from some of the most well-known researchers and physical therapists around the world. It was this conference that further sparked Marissa’s interest in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation. Outside of physical therapy, Marissa enjoys traveling and staying active whether it be at the gym or finding a new hiking spot. In the future, Marissa would like to attend courses to further her manual skills in the sports and orthopedic world, and would like to help promote injury prevention and conditioning in the dance community. Don’t assume that pain in your shoulder, elbows, or wrists will go away on its own. It is more common for the pain to worsen, and compensating for the pain by overusing the opposite arm can cause further injury to develop. GETTING A HANDLE ON SHOULDER, ELBOW, AND WRIST PAIN One of the biggest concerns regarding pain in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist is that it is difficult to impossible to actually allow these parts of the body time to rest.Everymovementandactionrequires thesebodyparts—andwhen thepain develops in both arms, as it often does, treating the pain becomes even more complicated. It is impossible to care for your basic needs without involving your shoulder or wrist, let alone get through a day at the office. This is why so many issues regarding pain in the shoulder, elbows, and wrists typically become chronic. Since it is difficult to allow these body parts time to properly rest, they continue being overused and the pain can actually worsen. TREATING SHOULDER, ELBOW AND WRIST PAIN Addressing the pain early on is the best way to prevent an issue from becoming chronic. Turning to medication and braces for pain management is not a long- term solution and will only push off the inevitable truth — that you need to find a solution for the problem that is causing you pain. Physicaltherapy isthe idealtool forsupport inthisregard.Workingwithaphysical therapistwillprovideyouwithanopportunitytounderstandwhatmovementsmay be causing further discomfort, and can help you to strengthen the surrounding muscles while improving range of motion, which together will likely alleviate some of the pain associated with your injury.

Thinkabout the tasks thatmakeup themajorityofyourday-to-day life. It isoften said that life in the 21st century is way easier on the body than life during any other time inhumanhistory—and it’s true that there isa fairamountofevidence tosupport this idea.Rather thanspendingallofyourdaysworking ina factoryor on a farm, the vast majority of Americans work indoors, often at a computer for a predetermined number of hours week after week. But this new lifestyle isn’t exactly harmless for the body, either. There are plenty of ways in which the common tasks of 21st-century life put the body under a great deal of stress. Sedentary lifestyles frequently contribute to weight gain, which increases your risk for a long list of obesity-related diseases. PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT It’s hard to imagine our Professional Care PT Patient, Raymond Hayes, without a smile on his face. He is one of the most polite, hardworking and outgoing young men we have had the pleasure to work with. However, just two years ago, life for young Raymond had taken a bit of a scary twist. While celebrating the Easter Holiday with family, then 14-year-old Raymond had suddenly experienced severe low back pain and paralysis. After being rushed to the hospital and following a week’s worth of testing, Raymond was diagnosed with Acute Transverse Myelitis, acute inflammation of

gray and white matter in one or more adjacent spinal cord segments. Some of the common symptoms with this neurological disorder include:

• •

pain and discomfort

• •

weakness in the arms/legs

bladder dysfunction and/or bowel motility problems

sensory symptoms such as numbness or tingling

Following Raymond’s diagnosis, he would spend one month at Stony Brook University Hospital, under the care of Neurologist Dr. Louis Manganas, before being transferred to St. Charles where he would endure several months of intense Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy services, learning to walk again and participate in every-day activities. Now 16 years old, Raymond spends his rehab time with his personal Professional Care Physical Therapist, Dr. Catherine Powell. They work closely together on average, twice a week for several hours a day and we are happy to say that after a year of being home-schooled, Raymond has returned back to class full-time as a Junior to be with his friends at Greenport High School. Raymond is thrilled to be with his peers on a daily basis, and getting back to the everyday routine keeps him motivated. Although his new daily schedule is long and tiring, Raymond stays dedicated to his rehabilitation and continues to smile and keep a positive outlook on life, which is something we admire about him!
