WIN OR LOSE, IT’S ABOUT HAVING FUN

It’s been so fun to play sports and music with my brother. I feel fortunate to have such a close friendship with my sibling. We’ve been best friends since the day he was born. In fact, he’s the whole reason we live in the Treasure Valley. When my term in the Navy was coming to an end, I was trying to decide where we would settle down. I grew up visiting Idaho, and some of our extended family lives here, but we never stayed long. My brother and I had always planned on living next to each other, and when it came time to decide where to plant my roots, we looked to Idaho. Beth and I figured we’d come out here to try it, and it’s been the best decision we could have made. We love this area, and living near my brother is the best. Besides getting to play music and sports together, we take turns hosting any time there’s a holiday. I’m guessing we’ll go to his house this year to celebrate his new place. The close proximity also means that our families are one. Jocelyn was born a week after my brother’s son was, so the kids are really close. It’s pretty great to see our children develop the same friendships that my brother and I have enjoyed. I hope you all get to spend time with your families in the upcoming holiday season. We at Elkins Dental wish you a happy Thanksgiving! We sure are thankful for you and your continued reliance on us regarding all of your dental-health needs.

My brother Russ and me during this season of softball

a trade-off; you can either have a high batting average or a lot of home runs. I like being the guy who gets on base and then lets someone else take us home. Last season, there we were, in the bottom of the seventh inning — we only play seven innings in this league — and the game was tied up. I got up to bat. When the pitcher threw, the ball sped toward me, and I felt that perfect point of contact as I hit my first-ever home run. And it hasn’t happened since. The homer was exactly what we needed to win the game. A couple years before, my brother told me, “If you ever hit a home run, I’ll buy you a root-beer float.” So as I ran the bases, he cheered and yelled, “I’m buying you a root-beer float!”He made good on his promise, too.We went to A&W after the game, and that was the best-tasting root-beer float I’ve ever had.

‘Tis the season for soccer balls and baseball mitts to be put away and gloves and winter coats to come out. Our men’s softball league recently finished up, and although it frees me up to play more music, I really enjoyed the season and will miss it during the winter months. In the spring and fall, we play at different parks around town, and in addition to getting us outside, it’s a fun social activity. Mainly, the games just feel like a big group of guys hanging out. My brother and I have been playing together for the past several years on a team that includes our cousins and many of our friends. Whether we win or lose, what it comes down to for us is having fun. One game last season was especially memorable. I’ve always prided myself on hitting a high batting average — and I get on base almost every time. But it’s

A New Adventure for Jessica Taking On the World of Dental Insurance, and Acing It

running smoothly. The two have a great camaraderie, and Jessica points out that the strong team spirit is what makes working at Elkins Dental so great. “The people are fabulous to work with. Everyone is very compassionate, motivated, and pleasant to be around,” she says. Discovering information that will help others is something that Jessica enjoys. She enjoys her role in making the insurance process easier for our team members and for our patients. “I love seeing people come in and feeling like I made a contribution,” Jessica says. Jessica grew up in Emmett and appreciates the community here. At home, you’ll find her hanging out with her daughter, Aarlea, and cheering her on in her extracurricular activities. Aarlea just wrapped up her soccer season, and now, “It’s on to the next adventure,” Jessica says. Aarlea hasn’t decided what adventure that will be just yet, but she’ll likely try her hand at a new athletic pursuit. “I’m encouraging her to try them all to find which ones she likes most,” Jessica explains. The season will also bring some holiday concerts where Jessica will support Aarlea in the honor choir. Between those activities, the two will find some cozy days to spend time at home.

Since joining our team last spring as our insurance coordinator, Jessica has

taken on a big role with a sense of adventure. Despite the daunting task of deciphering complex insurance guidelines, Jessica jumped in wholeheartedly, studying, reading, and doing everything she could to develop the knowledge needed for her role. With her intrepid spirit, she’s somehow making this complex undertaking look easy. As Robin says, “She’s killing it. She took on a huge task and has been doing a great job.” Jessica’s thorough work ethic and attention to detail are skills that she uses daily as she carefully reads through policies and sees that we comply with insurance guidelines. She communicates this information to our dental team and works closely with Melissa to keep insurance communication

“Now that fall is here, I have baking plans,” Jessica says. We couldn’t be more excited to have Jessica on our team!

365 DAYS OF GRATITUDE

Can you imagine writing 365 thank-you letters? It sounds like a lot, but the process of writing them (all by hand, mind you) turned one man’s life around when he thought he had nothing left to be grateful for. John Kralik is the author of “A Simple Act of Gratitude,” the book that chronicles his journey from hopelessness to joy through saying thank you. Kralik’s life felt at its lowest after a divorce and a failed year of business. During a hike on New Year’s Day, he had a realization: “I needed to learn to be grateful for the things I had, rather than to focus on the things I wanted, or the many things I felt I had lost,” Kralik describes. He made the resolution to write 365 thank-you notes over the year, and the experience changed his perspective. “I became grateful as I noticed the good things in my life,” Kralik says. In the month of Thanksgiving, it’s a good reminder about the power of saying thank you.

A HISTORIC VETERANS DAY Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the End of World War I

THE RESTORATION OF PEACE In 1918, Germany surrendered unconditionally, and the armistice ended the fighting at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, though the war did not officially end until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles the following July. An estimated 16 million soldiers and civilians died in just four years, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in modern history. VETERANS DAY Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day was first observed on Nov. 11, 1919, to honor the one-year anniversary of the armistice, and it became a U.S. holiday in 1938. Today, Veterans Day celebrates veterans who served their country honorably. The U.K., France, Australia, and Canada also commemorate their veterans in November. If you know a veteran, thank them for their service this month.

Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is a celebration of life. It’s a day to honor the power of peace and the living veterans across the globe who have served their countries. This November, take a moment to remember the war that helped shape the international community’s dedication to peace and thank the individuals who served to defend it. THE GREAT WAR By 1914, a world war had been years in the making, but the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire by a Serbian nationalist provided the spark that would eventually burn down much of Europe. A chain reaction of land disputes, pre-emptive attacks, and strategic alliances brought over 30 countries into World War I. The Great War that ravaged Europe resulted in a devastating loss of life, but from those ashes rose a renewed appreciation for the importance of peace and a global effort to ensure its place in the future.

This year, Veterans Day takes on particular historic significance: Nov. 11, 2018, marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War. Countries around the world will commemorate the signing of this peace agreement with moments of silence, centennial ceremonies, and historical exhibits.
