At the centre of the development, is a stylish new square, just opposite the imposing remains of Greyfriars which was founded for a community of Franciscan friars in 1231 by Thomas of Berkeley. The monastery was closed in 1538 during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries. Earlier this year, the nearby St Mary de Crypt Church reopened after undergoing a £2.1million restoration. Dating back to the 12th century, it was where one of the founders of Methodism, George Whitefield gave his first sermon and the founder of the Sunday School movement Robert Raikes was baptized in the church l
