OUR VISION FOR OUR PRACTICE THE TRUTH ABOUT CONNECTEDNESS

One of the most important lessons we’ve learned, both as individuals and as a couple, is that everything in life is connected. Some people refer to this connectedness as a ripple effect, meaning that a small change in a complex system can cause large changes in the overall outcome. In short, no matter how minute a change might seem initially, it can still lead to drastic results somewhere down the line. Our belief in this type of connectedness is the foundation of the vision we have for our practice. “The huge scope of our practice serves as testament to our commitment to help clients feel better — not just after an injury, but throughout their bodies.” Prior to opening Regenerative Sport Spine & Spa, we were both working in the medical field, but we had a dream of opening our own practice that would accomplish three objectives. First, we wanted to create a space where clients were examined as a whole being rather than for their injury alone. Through our experience working in other offices and as injured clients ourselves, we have seen a common trend in other physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists. They have a tendency to think of a client solely as an injured body part. They’ll look at clients’ shoulders, knees, or backs and recommend treatment, but they won’t take the time to take a step back and examine how the whole body functions. Just as it is with anything else in life, all the parts of the body are connected. Examining and fixing

one isolated problem could cause a ripple effect, creating other issues in the future.

Our second objective was to offer people an all-encompassing space they could visit regarding anything pertaining to their bodies that would provide them with treatments other than surgery. Because we offer services like physical therapy for sports injuries, stem cell treatments for spinal pain, platelet- rich plasma treatment for hair loss, dermal fillers, and botox injections to help with headaches, the huge scope of our practice serves as testament to our commitment to help clients feel better — not just after an injury, but throughout their bodies. In a time when surgery is touted by many medical professionals as the only possible solution for pain or injuries, we wanted to offer people something different. Our own athletic careers are peppered with sports injuries from years spent playing basketball, baseball, and beach volleyball. After undergoing several surgeries of our own and still not seeing results, we know firsthand that surgery doesn’t always work, so clients should know it’s not their only option. Our third and topmost objective in opening this practice was to empower others working in this field by giving them the opportunity to treat clients the way they should be able to. In the vast majority of physical therapy or chiropractic offices, health providers typically see as many as four clients in an hour. This

means they’re only getting 15 minutes to examine, diagnose, and offer treatment. We know how much time, effort, and preparation goes into becoming a medical provider, and that is why we will never ask our own team members to meet with more than one client in an hour. In this way, our team gets the time they need to examine the client holistically, and our clients get the time they need to tell their story and ask questions. For nearly two years, we’ve been able to meet these objectives by offering people access to supreme customer service and treatments that don’t involve surgery or prescription pills. We are so grateful to the clients who have trusted us with their injuries, and we look forward to those we meet in 2019! -Dr. Pallavi Cherukupally and Daniel Tribby

THE TRUTH ABOUT STEM CELL INJECTIONS

WHAT, WHERE, AND WHY?

WHERE SHOULD YOU GO TO RECEIVE INJECTIONS? While this kind of treatment is extremely beneficial, the phrase “too much of a good thing” exists

While the use of stem cells for regenerative treatment still remains a hot topic in various circles throughout the world, stem cells themselves are not a new discovery. In fact, they have existed for exactly as long as the human body! Researchers spent years studying the healing properties of these specific types of cells, and eventually started trials to test their ability to serve as an effective form of treatment. Now stem cells are transforming the way doctors heal the human body, for everything from sports injuries to treatments for heart disease and cancer. WHAT ARE STEM CELLS? Stem cells reside primarily in fat and bone marrow, and their most amazing characteristic is that they are capable of transforming into different types of cells to heal organs, tissues, and joints throughout your body. They are the only type of cell in the body that has the ability to turn into a brand-new cell with a completely different function! This ability gives them powerful healing properties. WHY ARE STEM CELLS USED IN THERAPY? Stem cells work to maximize the body’s own natural healing system by transforming into new cells that replace the damaged cells and repair the injured tissue at the site. In this way, stem cells allow you to heal your own body. Doctors today are successfully using stem cells to promote tissue healing and repair for several conditions, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, leukemia, spine, shoulder, or knee injuries, and even erectile dysfunction. There are few things in life that feel better than crawling into a comfy bed after a long day. Sleep is an essential part of human health. After a mere 24 hours of sleep deprivation, bodily functions and mental faculties start to go haywire, and 11 days seems to be the longest a person can live without sleep. While people acknowledge that sleep has always been a necessary part of human existence, very few know how drastically nightly routines have changed over time. Here are three significantly different historical approaches to sleep. BRAIN FLOODS For centuries, theorists associated sleep with blood loss and other health problems. But by the 1800s, notable physicians blamed sleep on a process known as congestion theory. In this theory, sleep was thought to be brought on by an overwhelming flow of blood to the brain, effectively flooding it and sending sleepers into a dreamlike state. SLEEP GAPS While many modern sleep experts support the consecutive eight-hour sleep regimen, historically, people had completely different sleep schedules. Medieval society actually had two sleep sessions a night — known as biphasic sleep — with a gap of wakefulness in between to eat, pray, talk, read, or write by candlelight. But by the 1920s, this practice of having two sleep sessions each night entirely receded from

for a reason. Nowadays, loads of chiropractic providers are offering stem cell injections at their establishments, but unfortunately, many of them don’t have the proper training to provide these services. If you think that you might be a good candidate for regenerative stem cell treatment, make sure you are consulting with a licensed medical doctor with specialty training in spinal and joint

injections. There are many benefits you can experience from stem cell therapy, but you still need to make sure you are working with an expert.

HOW THE ART OF SLEEP HAS CHANGED OVER TIME THE HISTORY OF SNOOZING

the social consciousness. Historians attribute this shift to innovations in artificial lighting and work schedules during the Industrial Revolution that required workers to stay up longer and sleep less. COZY BLANKETS Most people find it difficult to sleep without some kind of covering, like a blanket, over their bodies. While researchers of the past entertained the idea that blankets offer some kind of primal protection for sleepers, they now believe the coverings help with temperature regulation, as maintaining a comfortable body temperature is necessary for good sleep. However, according to a recent study conducted in Sweden, weighted blankets help with much more than just temperature. Due to the added pressure, weighted blankets provide deep pressure touch (DPT), which increases the body’s amount of serotonin — a chemical that helps decrease blood pressure and rapid heart rate. Because of the effects of increased serotonin, weighted blankets are believed to help with anxiety and insomnia. While sleep patterns may change over time, the human need for sleep will not. As you crawl into your bed tonight, take some time to think about the way your ancestors approached their nightly snooze sessions. It’ll put you to sleep faster than counting sheep.

SURGERY VS. PHYSICAL THERAPY For most of us, pain is an unfortunate side effect of daily living. In fact, according to the UNC School of Medicine, approximately 31 million Americans experience pain at any given time, and back pain specifically is the leading cause of disability worldwide, resulting in at least 264 million lost workdays each year. With statistics like this, chances are you or someone close to you suffers from some kind of physical pain frequently. Whether this pain stems from a chronic condition, past injury, or a recent accident, you might think surgery is your only option. This could not be further from the truth. While the societal tendency in years past has been to quickly usher injured people straight to surgery, in many cases, physical therapy has been shown to be just as effective — if not more so — in treating a wide range of conditions. In fact, 80 percent of people who have seen physical therapists for issues like rotator cuff or meniscal tears, degenerative disc disease, and various forms of arthritis report extremely effective treatment experiences. Clients’ healing experiences with physical therapy show that surgery may not always be the best course of action. We get that this might seem strange; surgeons spend over a decade in educational training programs, so why wouldn’t you trust them to offer the best treatment? While there are certainly instances where surgery is necessary,

a board-certified physical therapist can provide an individually tailored rehabilitation program, helping clients avoid a costly and risky procedure. Still, taking the time to find a board- certified physical therapist that is attentive and knowledgeable is a vital step in your healing process. That’s why here at ACTIVCORE Physical Therapy, we

pride ourselves on using the most innovative medical treatments available. Our goal is to help

you return to your life faster, stronger, and more agile than you were before you walked through our doors — no anesthesia necessary!

WITH GARLIC AND ZUCCHINI

Because they are traditionally made with buckwheat, many brands of soba noodles are gluten- free. Combining them with the increasingly-popular “zoodles” results in a healthy, light meal that you can eat for lunch the next day.

ingredients

QUICK TEST TO CHECK YOUR POSTURE

4 ounces soba noodles

1/4 cup soy sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons water

1. Stand with the back of your head against a wall. 2. Place your heels 6 inches from the wall. Your buttocks and shoulder blades should touch the wall. 3. See how much space there is between your neck and the wall; a gap larger than 2 inches indicates bad posture and a curving spine.

2–3 cloves garlic, grated

1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon ginger, peeled and grated

1 small zucchini, julienned into noodle strands

directions

1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add soba noodles and cook until tender, about 4–5 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water, then set aside. 2. In a large skillet or wok over medium-low heat, warm olive oil until barely shimmering. Add grated garlic and ginger, and cook for 1 minute. Pour in soy sauce and water, and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 2 minutes. 3. Add onions, simmering for 3 minutes. Stir in zucchini and cook for an additional 90 seconds. 4. Add soba noodles and toss to fully coat. Serve immediately, or cool and serve as a cold dish.

TIPS FOR GREAT SITTING POSTURE

1.

Keep your head straight, not tilted up or down.

2. Keep your shoulders back and try to relax. 3. Sit with your knees slightly lower than your hips. 4. Keep your feet flat on the floor.

4. Why Charities Hate Spring-Cleaning

DONATE WITH CARE THE RIGHT WAY TO DONATE AFTER SPRING-CLEANING

Spring is in the air, and it’s time to celebrate with another round of spring-cleaning. Banish the clutter and make room in your life for something new! Many charities see a sharp increase in donations as spring-cleaning season starts. Donating your used books, kids’ toys, and gently worn clothing allows your old items to have a second life. However, when filling that donation box, make sure you’re donating each item because it can do good and not just because you feel bad about throwing it away. Charities have a big problem with well-meaning citizens dropping off items that are better left in the trash. There are many items charities simply cannot handle. Most charities will have lists of items they can and cannot accept on their websites. Some items that you should not donate include:

These items may be unsafe to sell, costly to ship, or impossible to refurbish effectively. When a charity regularly receives items they cannot use, they have to spend hours of

manpower sorting through things that end up in the trash anyway. This process can be expensive for organizations with

already-strained resources. Some local charities spend over $1,000 a year on dumpster and trash removal fees for unusable donations.

While charities will have no choice but to throw unusable donations in the trash, there are services you can use to make your spring-cleaning eco-friendly, even for items you can’t donate. For example, if you have torn or stained blue jeans, reach out to Blue Jeans Go Green. This program keeps denim out of landfills by turning it into insulation. And while Goodwill can’t take your batteries or old flip phone, you can check out Call2Recycle.org to learn how to safely recycle your e-waste.

• Expired medications • Old TVs • Cribs • Loose remote controls • Personal care items, like soap, shampoo, or makeup • Mattresses • Carpets

• Tangled cords or phone chargers • Any broken, damaged, or dirty items

Your donations can be a big help to local charities. Just don’t “donate” your garbage.
