Safety without borders Several OPP detachments in Eastern Ontario were paying special attention to drivers heading to and from the borders between Ontario and either Québec or the United States. The Safety Without Borders campaign through mid-March saw both Canadian and American police agencies working in partnership on traffic safety between the two countries. In Eastern Ontario during the campaign, OPP patrols for Highway 401, Highway 416 and Highway 417 covering the area between the Québec border south to Gananoque and the U.S. border crossing and northwest up to Hawkesbury issued almost 200 tickets to motorists for various reasons. Speeders were the top ticket takers at 115 notices. Drivers not wearing seatbelts or not using proper child restraints for young passengers was the next category at 17 tickets. Four drivers were cited for distracted driving, either talking or texting on a mobile phone. Eight drivers were tagged under Ontario’s Move Over Law for failing to pull aside and out of the path of a speeding emergency vehicle. OPP incident report noted no tickets issued for impaired driving during the campaign. – Gregg Chamberlain

Dating back to the 1880’s, the vouchers were first distributed by Asa Candler, who had invested in a new product that would come to dominate international sales: Coca Cola. The man, wanting to transform the beverage popular amongst the growing American populace, created a massive marketing strategy that relied heavily on coupons. They were mailed throughout the country and inserted in several magazines. In addition, employees were given vouchers to hand out to potential customers. These coupons offered Americans a free beverage. The strategy paid off, and some years later, Candler was able to purchase the company. Many decades later, with the advent of technology, coupons have became available on the Internet, much to the delight of shoppers everywhere. Utilizing these, American shoppers saved $4.6 billion in 2011.
