Burroughs did some traveling and discov- ered a few ideas on what her future might hold. “Products are not readily available elsewhere,” explained Burroughs. “I started seeing things in a different way, and thought about running my own business. My travels have helped me to learn about life and living, and what I wanted to do.” Living in Vankleek Hill with her husband and two children, 7-year-old-Meeka, and 4-year- old Maddix, has been wonderful for Burroughs. “We tried living in Ottawa, but we just didn’t

Originally from Ottawa, Burroughs graduated with a degree in Business from the University of Ottawa. “I wasn’t surewhat I wanted to do at first,” explained Burroughs. “I knew I wanted to travel.”

like it,” said Burroughs. “We wanted to start a family. My husband is fromVankleek Hill, so we moved back here about nine years ago.” The Burroughs built their first house onHappy Hollow Road in Vankleek Hill. “When we built this house, we had a little more experience,” explained Burroughs about her current home. “Things like amud-roomand having the laundry room on the main floor made a lot more sense, especially with children.” Burroughs and her sister had discussed ways for their families to live a little healthier. Nico- laides, also with two children, 10-year-old Ben and 9-year-old Aleksa, who has special needs including extremely sensitive skin, wanted to create something that wouldn’t be harsh on Aleksa’s skin. “She just couldn’t use the com- mercial brands of soaps and creams,” explained Burroughs. “We wanted to provide our families and friends with healthier options.” The two did some research, found a few reci- pes and started making speciality products such as deodorant, moisturizers and lip balm. “We use totally natural products like cocoa butter and coconut oil. It is really good for sensitive skin,” Burroughs explained. “The cocoa butter smells just like chocolate. It’s amazing. It absorbs into the skin after a few minutes. It would be so dis- tracting to smell like chocolate all day.” During their research, Burroughs found that commercial products are linked to Alzheimer’s and cancer. “We found that some of these prod- ucts contain a chemical found in anti-freeze called propylene glycol. Some amounts of this chemical have been found in breast cancer pa- tients,” she explained. “It’s not like it happens all at once. It’s years and years of accumulation that is the problem. Wemake things that have no perfumes or fragrances and use essential oils. It doesn’t leave a smell. Skin problems like eczema is a sign of your skin fighting back.” The sisters soon saw what a positive ef- fect the products had on Aleksa. “Her skin is now so smooth,” said Burroughs. “It used to be so dry and painful for her. Her skin is like but- ter now.” They named the company ORGANIC C.O.C.O.N.U.T with the acronym meaning Clean, Organic, Choice, Outrageous, Nutritious, Unique, True. Burroughs’ friend, Heather J. Hay Charron, thanked her on Facebook for some products she had used and loved. “It just blew up after that,” laughed Burroughs. “All of a sudden, I amgetting calls for all kinds of orders. We quickly made a Facebook page and plan on officially launching our business very soon. We would like to have a launching party, but we are just in the plan- ning stages right now. We didn’t want to do ev- erything at once, but I guess sometimes you just need a push to move forward.” Burroughs hopes to make it big in the busi- ness world as long as her products don’t decline in quality. “Healthy living is about giving some- thing up in order to get something. “You have to give up the chemicals in order to be healthier. All of our products are pronounceable and healthy,” said Burroughs. “Our next step is probably going to be the Vankleek Hill Market.”
