Les deux jeunes étudiants obtiendront des heures de bénévolat pour leur programme scolaire en remerciement. Pour les connaisseurs du ski de fond, une piste aménagée fait toute la différence en ce qui concerne le confort et la beauté de la chose. «Avec un tracé, tu n’as pas besoin de te soucier de rester en ligne et il n’y a pas de dérapage, a dit le fondeur et propriétaire du magasin Intersport de Hawkesbury, Denis Charlebois. C’est plus agréable et tu peux alors te concentrer sur ta technique, ta vitesse et le paysage. Le golf est un beau et grand terrain avec beaucoup d’espace. Cela va ressembler à la piste de Brownsburg-Chatham, l’une des plus belles dans la région. Et ce qui est parfait, c’est que ce sera pour monsieur et madame tout-le-monde.» «Quand tu as une piste, c’est comme patiner sur une glace d’aréna, a rajouté Louis Prévost. En ayant une piste sur un terrain de golf, c’est idéal pour faire du ski à la pleine lune, car il y a peu d’arbres. En plus d’être un bon exercice, la vue est imprenable et c’est facile d’accès.» La piste est ouverte en tout temps, mais il est important de respecter les limites du parcours, pour ne pas endommager les tertres de départ et les verts du terrain de golf. Le début de la piste est situé tout juste au côté du stationnement.
Le Club de golf et curling de Hawkesbury a ouvert au public, au cours de la fin de se- maine dernière, une piste de ski de fondqui longe le parcours du terrainde golf. L’accès à la piste d’environneuf kilomètres est gratuit pour tous et les skieurs peuvent l’emprunter en tout temps. «Il y avait déjà des skieurs qui venaient au terrain de golf pour faire leurs propres pistes, alors l’idée d’en aménager et d’en entretenir une grande nous-mêmes a fait son chemin, a indiqué l’administratrice des ventes etmar- keting du Club, Andréanne Roy. L’endroit est magnifique et les skieurs n’ont pas à traverser de routes pour compléter la piste. Nous allons aussi couper la piste en deux pour permettre aux skieurs de faire un parcours plus court.» La piste est entretenue grâce à un dameur traceur, de l’équipement donné par l’orga- nisme Ski Larose. Le dameur permet un entre- tien facile de la piste, tassant la neige pour ensuite creuser les deux petites tranchées pour les skis des fondeurs. «C’est de l’équipement que nous n’utili- sions plus, a indiqué le directeur d’Urbanisme et Foresterie au Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell, Louis Prévost. Il y a quatre ans, nous avons acheté de l’équipement plus sophistiqué pour nos sentiers et le petit dameur n’était plus nécessaire. Ça fait plaisir de le donner, car c’est avec cela que nous avons parti nos sentiers dans la Forêt Larose. C’est donc une

Décès d’un bébé Un poupon de quatre mois est décédé dans la nuit du 24 au 25 janvier dernier, dans un appartement d’un immeuble de la rue Cartier à Hawkesbury. Bien que les policiers se soient rendus sur les lieux, la mort n’est pas considérée comme suspecte; un problème de santé serait plutôt en cause. «C’est un appel médical qui a été logé. Comme le décès a eu lieu à l’extérieur de l’hôpital, c’est normal que nous y soyons allés. On a constaté les faits, c’est tout», a expliqué l’agent Pierre Dubois, du détachement de Hawkesbury de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario. Lancement du programme Moi j’écrase
Dipika Damerla, ministre associée des Soins de longue durée et de la Promotion du mieux-être, s’est jointe à huit partenaires du domaine de la santé de l’est de l’Ontario, le 21 janvier dernier à l’hôtel de ville d’Ottawa, afin de lancer le programme Moi j’écrase . Celui-ci est un programme innovateur destiné aux fumeurs habitant l’est de l’Ontario et souhaitant arrêter de fumer ou diminuer leur consommation de tabac. Moi j’écrase est un partenariat entre l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa, le Programme régional de cancérologie de Champlain, Santé publique Ottawa, le Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario, le Bureau de santé du comté et du district de Renfrew, le Bureau de santé du district de Leeds, Grenville et Lanark, Téléassistance pour fumeurs et le Mackay Manor, un centre de réadaptation résidentiel pour toxicomanes, situé à Renfrew. Burroughs did some traveling and discov- ered a few ideas on what her future might hold. “Products are not readily available elsewhere,” explained Burroughs. “I started seeing things in a different way, and thought about running my own business. like it,” said Burroughs. “We wanted to start a family. My husband is fromVankleek Hill, so we moved back here about nine years ago.” The Burroughs built their first house onHappy Hollow Road in Vankleek Hill. “When we built this house, we had a little more experience,” explained Burroughs about her current home. “Things like amud-roomand having the laundry room on the main floor made a lot more sense, especially with children.” Burroughs and her sister had discussed ways for their families to live a little healthier. Nico- laides, also with two children, 10-year-old Ben and 9-year-old Aleksa, who has special needs including extremely sensitive skin, wanted to create something that wouldn’t be harsh on Aleksa’s skin. “She just couldn’t use the com- mercial brands of soaps and creams,” explained Burroughs. “We wanted to provide our families and friends with healthier options.” The two did some research, found a few reci- pes and started making speciality products such as deodorant, moisturizers and lip balm. “We use totally natural products like cocoa butter and coconut oil. It is really good for sensitive skin,” Burroughs explained. “The cocoa butter smells just like chocolate. It’s amazing. It absorbs into the skin after a few minutes. It would be so dis- tracting to smell like chocolate all day.” During their research, Burroughs found that commercial products are linked to Alzheimer’s and cancer. “We found that some of these prod- ucts contain a chemical found in anti-freeze called propylene glycol. Some amounts of this chemical have been found in breast cancer pa- tients,” she explained. “It’s not like it happens all at once. It’s years and years of accumulation that is the problem. Wemake things that have no perfumes or fragrances and use essential oils. It doesn’t leave a smell. Skin problems like eczema is a sign of your skin fighting back.” The sisters soon saw what a positive ef- fect the products had on Aleksa. “Her skin is now so smooth,” said Burroughs. “It used to be so dry and painful for her. Her skin is like but- ter now.” They named the company ORGANIC C.O.C.O.N.U.T with the acronym meaning Clean, Organic, Choice, Outrageous, Nutritious, Unique, True. Burroughs’ friend, Heather J. Hay Charron, thanked her on Facebook for some products she had used and loved. “It just blew up after that,” laughed Burroughs. “All of a sudden, I amgetting calls for all kinds of orders. We quickly made a Facebook page and plan on officially launching our business very soon. We would like to have a launching party, but we are just in the plan- ning stages right now. We didn’t want to do ev- erything at once, but I guess sometimes you just need a push to move forward.” Burroughs hopes to make it big in the busi- ness world as long as her products don’t decline in quality. “Healthy living is about giving some- thing up in order to get something. “You have to give up the chemicals in order to be healthier. All of our products are pronounceable and healthy,” said Burroughs. “Our next step is probably going to be the Vankleek Hill Market.”

Fun in Dalkeith at the Winter Carnival
It’s carnival season! Residents and onlookers came out in droves to see the annual Dalkeith Winter Carnival parade. Council members tossed candies at children in the crowdwho were excited to be part of the fun. Children fromLaggan Public School joined in the parade waving at spectators. The carnival also included a plethora of activities at the community hall, or ‘ThunderDome’. Saturday’s events included a broomball tournament, a kiddie corner, a hockey game, and a dance. Sunday’s activities included Fristine the clown and a roast beef dinner with 50/50 draw. Several other winter carnivals are just ahead with Vankleek Hill January 31 and February 1, L’Orignal, and Lefaivre February 7 and 8, and Chrysler February 16 to 20. Passport ǡ Ƥ Ǥ
