The Aging Workforce: Four Ways Manufacturers Can Prepare

Rondo-Pak Launches Major Solar Energy Project In NJ Camden, New Jersy based Rondo-Pak an- nounced that it has chosen Dynamic Energy LLC, a leading independent renewable en- ergy company, to deliver solar power to its Camden, New Jersey operations. Rondo-Pak, which produces folding car- tons and printed components for the pharma- ceutical, medical device and consumer indus- tries, will invest over $4 million in the major solar project. Once installed, the project will provide 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy per year – equal to over 1.7 million pounds of coal burned annually. The rooftop solar array and carports will cover the entire facility and over 90 percent of the parking lots. Over 25 years, the system will generate approximately 52.6 million kilo- watt-hours of electricity and is expected to provide at least 60 percent of the electricity needs at the facility. Dynamic Energy will pro- vide engineering, procurement and construc- tion services for the project. Construction commenced in October, 2021. “This solar energy project is exciting for Rondo-Pak as it represents a major milestone in our continuous pursuit to reduce our car-

For quite some time now, manufacturers have been carefully watching and planning for workforce changes as baby boomers and other older employees decide to retire.

According to a study by The Manufacturing Institute, the vast major- ity (78 percent) of companies indicated that they were “very or some- what” concerned about the impending aging workforce exodus. More concerning, however, is the concurrent brain drain that accompanies those retirements. For those companies who aren’t yet ready to deal with this pressing issue (or maybe are in the process of addressing it), the following numbers, courtesy of the Panopto Workplace Knowledge and Productivity Report, paint a dire picture: • As of 2017, nearly 25% of the manufacturing workforce was 55 or older. • By 2030, one in five Americans will be 65 or older. • In 2018, the median age of a manufacturing worker was 44.1, com- pared to 42 for the total labor force. • Lack of knowledge transfer is estimated to cost large businesses $47 million per year due to time waste, missed opportunities, frus- tration and delayed projects. Based on industry research, articles, best practice claims and case studies, the four themes found below have emerged on how the manu- facturing industry can effectively address this issue. These themes are CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

AICC To Offer Several New Sales Webinars

AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, is launch- ing several new sales webinars to give members the in- formation they need to continue to build their sales and understand their customers. Help your sales professionals succeed by teaching them how to “Create Impactful Value Statements for Every Sales Opportunity.” This webinar on Wednesday, Novem- ber 3, will explain how to create a value statement from a sales standpoint, develop “sources of value” for their of- ferings in words the customer understands, and a simple approach to develop a situational value statement through the eyes of the customer. Hours each day are spent staring at a screen. Sales professionals can use this to their advantage by learning to “Maximize Your Professional Persona Using LinkedIn” on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. Attendees will learn to develop an effective LinkedIn profile and create a winning follow-up cadence with customers. On Tuesday, January 11, 2022, find the answer to “Do You Have the Right Sales Structure for the Future?” One of the keys to driving profitable growth is having the right people in the right roles with the right training. When teams have their associates in the right roles, they perform and create value for the organization. Over 60 percent of once face-to-face salespeople are struggling to sell in the new virtual hybrid model. 50 per- cent of most salespeople have never received sales skills training. How do we have commercial conversations with our customers and prospects that ultimately deliver the revenue we need? Find out in “Commercial Conversations that Lead to Revenue” on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Continuous prospecting is key for companies to grow. The pandemic provided new challenges and opportunities to prospecting you need to adapt to. “Professional Pros- pecting” on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, will give attendees the best practices for sales professionals today. 40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Many states in the U.S. are now working to increase the transparency of recycling labels and symbols. The aim is

to get to the root of industries us- ing symbols, such as the chasing arrows, with little-to-no correlation to what is actually being recycled. The chasing arrows symbol has been around since 1970 when a corrugated company called Container Corporation of Amer- ica (CCA – a distant ancestor of

packaging company. Our industry’s long-standing com- mitment to recovery efforts has led to an extraordinary success story in the recovery of old corrugated containers (OCC). Today, corrugated is the most recycled packaging material on the planet with a U.S. recovery rate hovering near 90 percent for the last decade. The problem though is not those who use the symbol on products and packaging that are verifiably recycled, but those who use the symbol in spite of the FTC’s Green Guides instructions for “recyclable” claims. This behavior

Mary Drain

WestRock) sponsored a contest to design a symbol to promote their products made from recycled materials. A

deceives consumers into thinking that their product/package will be recycled at a level greater than or equal to 60 percent. A 2019 study from the Consumer Brand Association shows that most U.S. consum- ers presume that all items marked with the three arrow symbol are recyclable when that is not the case at all. While most plastic products have a recycling symbol, actually less than 10 percent is currently and has historically been recycled annually. The re- mainder goes to landfill or is burned. On October 5th, California’s Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 343 (SB 343) prohibiting the use of the chasing arrows symbol on non-recyclable products and packaging. Under the new law, a product or packaging that displays the chasing arrows symbol or any other symbol or statement, that indicates it is recyclable, is deceptive or misleading unless the product is “recy- clable” in accordance with California-spe- cific regulations and is of a material type and form that routinely becomes feedstock used in the production of new products or packaging. Similar proposals have been introduced by legislators in other states as well. Six Mindsets To Help Your Team And Company ‘Reboot’ BY JASON V. BARGER

Did you know that 7.6 million people quit their jobs in the months of April and May of 2021? Reports of loneliness at work are as high as ever. Di-

vorce rates are up 34 percent from last year. To say people have been a little stressed would be an understatement. Let’s dig a little deeper into what the research is also telling us. nine out of every 10 employees say they want to work for a more meaningful culture. People want to feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves, they want to feel appreciated, valued and cared for. In the midst of so much angst, division and uncertainty in the world that seems out of our control,

Cosmo DeNicola Chairman, Amtech Software

Jason V. Barger

people need to be reminded about what is within our control Teams and companies need a reboot. Most teams and companies are still figuring out how to help support their people and engage with them remotely, in hybrid settings, and in-person gatherings. With all that people have been navi-gating, differ- ing modes of communication, the expansion of remote workers, global health, issues of racism, social injustice and equity, political and eco- nomic uncertainty, they are also expected to maximize the experience, product or service that you are delivering to the marketplace. Here are six mindsets to reboot your team: 1. Clarity —Is your Mission clear? Is your Vision clear? Are your Values for how your team is com-mitted to travel clear? Is your Strategy for the next priorities clear? Take this time as an opportunity to reboot and make sure all are aligned with clarity. The outcome is that everything on the path forward becomes clearer. Your team may not have all the answers, but they’ll have energy and clear direction on how to take the next step. 2. Inclusivity — Leaders in the world play an enormous role in widening the circle so that more diverse backgrounds, ideas, perspectives, and experiences have a seat at the table. Teams and organizations will lead the way forward in society by modeling how to have civil, respectful dia- logue and educate people on the strengths of diversity, equity and inclu- sion. When our teams are welcoming, it breathes life and energy into all. . 3. Agility — Possibility + Adaptability is the name of the game in a chang- ing world. Leaders have to practice an occasional reboot that allows their mind to find new ways of doing things and the courage to adapt to opportunities that emerge. If leaders return to the “this is the way we’ve always done it” mindset then they will sit back and watch their people leave the room. 4. Grit — Resolve + Toughness is critical to help people navigate their way through obstacles, challenges, negativity, finger pointing, and divi- sion. Leaders help their people reboot to stay focused on the present moment and the actions that are needed in order to take the next step. Toughness isn’t about being physically stronger than others, it is about being able to be vulnerable with your people and still have the resolve to find solutions, together.

That equates to nearly $66 billion of lost benefits. We’ve forgotten that the research actually shows that de- liberate rest is essential to elite performance. When we allow our bodies, minds and hearts to deliberately rest, we breathe more efficiently and are better at everything else. 6. Ownership — Accountability + Action are mindsets and oxygen that the best leaders and team cultures on the planet breathe. They connect the things they say they will do with positive accountability and action. Accountability isn’t a negative word, it’s a positive mantra that all take ownership of. In a world where people are quick to gossip, point fingers, and be critics about what isn’t working, the best leaders reboot themselves and their people and shift conversations from blame to solutions-focused. The best cultures proactively help their people navigate through obstacles, together. They inten-tionally choose to inhale positivity and the 6 mindsets above and exhale negativity, blame, gossip and division. The ecosystem of their culture is grown, developed, cultivated and led with inten-tionality, one breath at a time. The process for developing high-performing and en- gaged teams never stops and the best leaders, teams and organizations are committed to rebooting how they hire,

FBA Welcomes Kammerer As New Manager Of Technical Services Fibre Box Association (FBA) announced that it will wel- come a new Manager of Technical Services on November 1, 2021. Chase Kammerer will join Mary Alice Drain, Direc- tor of Technical Services. Kammerer will manage the FBA standing technical committees (Technical, Environmental, and Health & Safety) by administering agendas, minutes, and other meeting concerns. He’ll also work with the com- mittees to ensure that the technical publications in our FBA store are current. Beginning late last year, FBA committees meet virtually every six to eight weeks instead of twice a year in person. The boosted schedule has increased each of the commit- tee’s capability to stay better connected and advanced their project slate. The committees have been tackling more of their goals and it will be beneficial to have another technical staff member to facilitate additional work. The Technical Committee has already completed two research projects in 2019 and 2020 on environmental fac- tors and box design. A 2021 project funded by the ICPF on score profiles and their effect on BCT, has just begun. In addition, ICPF has approved a 2022 project related to pal- let overhang. The research projects have also sparked re- newed interest from university research labs on additional corrugated packaging research ideas.

Baumer hhs Launches Hot Melt System For E-Commerce Packaging Dayton, Ohio based Baumer hhs has announced the launch of its new hot melt system for e-commerce packag- ing. Designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality delivery boxes with pressure-sensitive adhesive closures, the turnkey system includes an energy-efficient melter, application head, controller, product guide, and durable mount with precision settings. Baumer hhs is a leader in detecting and dispensing cold and hot melt adhesives used to produce folding car- tons, corrugated packaging, post press graphic arts, and carton and case erecting and sealing. “Our new system enables e-commerce packaging pro- ducers to apply pressure-sensitive adhesives on corrugat- ed and cardboard with consistent uniformity and quality, resulting in better sealed boxes that ship reliably,“ said Rick Pallante, President of Baumer hhs USA and Canada. The new hot melt system helps users improve efficien- cy, productivity, and flexibility. A high melt rate of ≥ 100 kg/h with pressure-sensitive adhesives increases efficien- cy. A special application head, coupled with a new volu- metric flow controller, results in consistent performance at maximum production speeds. The system offers flexible configuration with various nozzles for the application head, and adaptable masks

for different application patterns depending on the type of packaging. The application head processes a variety of adhesives with a range of high viscosities, giving users flexibility in pressure-sensitive adhesives.

A silicone strip applicator, supplied by Baumer hhs through its partner ENPRO, is integrated into the system and can be used to control it. The new system also can be integrated with all Baumer hhs common controllers. Visit www.baumerhhs.com for more information or contact sales.usa@baumerhhs.com. The application head of the Baumer hhs hot melt system pro- cesses a variety of adhesives with a range of high viscosities.

PPEC Celebrates 20th Anniversary Of Waste Reduction Week In Canada BY RACHEL KAGAN The Paper & Paperboard Packaging Environmental Coun- cil (PPEC) is pleased to have celebrated the 20th anniver- sary of Waste Reduction Week in Canada. Waste Reduction Week is an

and a rise in e-commerce – the national recycling rate for corrugated boxes is estimated by PPEC to be at least 85 percent, while Ontario has a 98 percent recovery rate for corrugated cardboard. Keeping these materials in the recycling stream allows PPEC member mills to primarily use recycled fibres in their products. Recycled content is a key component of the Ca- nadian paper-based packaging industry’s circular econ- omy, keeping raw materials flowing for longer, reducing waste, and allowing them to be remade into new paper packaging products by PPEC member mills. PPEC’s 2020 Recycled Content Survey of Canadian mills found that the average recycled content of domes- tic Canadian shipments of the three major paper packag- ing grades – containerboard (to make corrugated boxes), boxboard (to make boxboard cartons), and kraft paper (to make paper bags) – is collectively 81.7 percent, up from 73.5 percent in 2018, and up from up from 47 percent back in 1990 when PPEC first began collecting this data. And consumers play a critical role in the paper-based packaging industry’s circular economy through their im- portant act of recycling. The majority of Canadians (94%) have access to recycling programs – and not only do they have access – they actively and regularly recycle their pa- per-based packaging, allowing those recycled fibres to make their way back to the mill to be remade into new paper packaging products again and again. in the production of recyclable paper-based packaging. Paper is a renewable resource and a highly sustainable material that can be recycled and remade into new pa- per-based packaging products. In general, paper can be recycled up to seven times, while corrugated box fibres can be used up to ten times to make new shipping boxes and other paper-based packaging products. Canada recycles almost 70 percent of its paper and cardboard, making it among the top paper recycling coun- tries. And looking at corrugated boxes in particular – which have seen an increase in demand due to the pandemic

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

PPEC Celebrates (CONT’D FROM PAGE 22)

And while most paper-based packaging made in Can- ada is made with recycled content, the paper fibres it was originally made from came from a tree. That’s why resource protection and sustainable forest management is critical to the operations of PPEC members and the Canadian paper-based packaging industry. All PPEC-member mills have independent, third-party certification that verifies that their paper fibre sources – recycled fibre, wood chips, and sawmill residues – are responsibly sourced. And while less than half of one per cent of Canadian commercial for- ests are harvested for paper-based packaging, every hect- are that is harvested must be successfully regenerated; in 2018, at least 427 million seedlings were planted across Canada. When you add it up, the Canadian paper-based packaging industry hardly uses any freshly cut trees to make paper packaging, and the little that is harvested, 0.2 percent in 2018, is successfully regenerated. When we use paper-based packaging, we all play a part in the circular economy of the paper-based packag- ing industry. Learn more the environmental sustainability of paper-based packaging by visiting PPEC’s website and follow us on social media on Twitter and LinkedIn. And to learn more about Waste Reduction Week visit https://wr- wcanada.com/en . Rachel Kagan is Executive Director of the Paper and Paperboard Packaging Environmental Council.

The Aging Workforce (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 )

to be filled, and then working to create a plan for the en- tire team or production chain. When older workers leave, it can set off a ripple effect as team member’s transition or new members are brought in. Early communication can ensure that the entire team is prepared, thoughts and con- cerns have been addressed, and any training or mentoring has been completed before the retirement takes place. Knowledge Transfer Succession planning and knowledge transfer are not activities reserved for top leadership. Think about the organizational information top trade professionals have about process, the quirks of the machines or lines they work on, and how to work best within and across teams. According to a survey of 1,500 baby boomers by Express Employment Professionals, few employers are asking for their knowledge before they leave. • 57 percent of baby boomers said they had shared less than half of the knowledge needed to perform their job responsibilities with those who will assume them after they retire. • 21 percent said they shared none of their knowledge. • Only 18 percent felt they had shared all of their knowl- edge. So how can organizations collect that valuable knowl- edge before it walks away? Begin by understanding that knowledge transfer is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Individuals learn and communicate in three basic ways:

fully developed in The Manufacturing Institute’s’ report on Aging in the Manufacturing Workforce and focus on early awareness, having a plan for transferring knowledge at all levels of the organization, retaining older workers when possible, maximizing their productivity and boosting their recruitment efforts. Awareness Awareness is more than just looking around and real- izing the industry’s workforce is growing older. While that certainly is the case, now is not the time to ignore the is- sue or look the other way. Communication is an essential piece of addressing an aging workforce. Creating the right environment for talking about future plans, goals and as- pirations, at any age, is key. Incorporating discussion of the future with all employees can keep organizations from being surprised by a sudden retirement. It is also a great way to discuss employee development, to see if employ- ees are engaged with their work, or if they are looking for a new challenge. Open communication can also allow older workers to communicate if working conditions have become physically stressful and, if so, for the employer to offer other alternatives. Communication should create a culture where all workers, including older workers, feel supported, valued and engaged. Awareness also includes assessing future workforce change in order to understand what positions will need
