Everyone Is Off to School

With three daughters in the house, “back to school” means serious preparation. Outfits, obviously, are the first priority. But then you have pencils, pens, notebooks, binders, backpacks, lunch boxes that match the backpack and so on. If you have kids, you know what I’m talking about. August is a busy month! It’s a busy month for my practice, too. Everybody wants to get their kids in for those end-of-summer checkups before the school year starts. It’s just as important as making sure they have all the school supplies they need, and as a result, our schedules are filling up, especially for the last week before school starts. If you want your kids to get in for their checkup, I recommend calling us right now. I also suggest scheduling for the first week of school instead of the week before. We still have after-school spots open that week, and that might work better with your schedule, too. There’s no better way to start school than with a back-to-school smile. And it only gets more important as the kids get older. I think that high school boys would be well-served if they realized how much girls appreciate clean teeth and non-smelly breath. Want to up the odds that she says “yes” to going to homecoming? Get your teeth cleaned! This holds true for college, too. If you’re sending a young man or woman

off to higher education this fall, make sure their teeth are going to be taken care of. The odds of them going to the dentist by themselves once they’re in school are low. With the rest of the family taken care of, how are your teeth doing? August is a great month for adult patients, especially that first week of school when you have a little free time in your schedule for the first time in months. If you’re like me, you might put off taking care of yourself so the kids get taken care of first. But now that summer is over, you don’t have to choose. Whether you just need a cleaning or more in-depth work, we can help you out. There’s no doubt about it: It may still be hot, but summer is just about over in our neck of the woods. Don’t forget dental cleaning when you do back-to-school preparations this year. Take care of those high schoolers and college kids, and take care of yourself, as well.

Looking forward to you next visit,

–Dr. Bridensti ne

ALERT: 2 ROGUE GOATS Do They Make Handcuffs for Hooves? Why would two goats be in the back of a police car? Did they wander onto private property? Get into a kick-fight at the local bar? Swallow a woman’s prized jewels? Nah. They were just lost.

On a Sunday morning, Sergeant Fitzpatrick of the Belfast Police Department in Maine spotted Louis and Mowgli, two pygmy goats who were clearly lost. He shepherded them into the back of his squad vehicle and called it in: “I got two rogue goats here.” He wasn’t worried about the condition of the car. The back of that car had seen more hostile characters in its day. He posted a cute picture of them on Facebook with the caption, “Got goats? We do, and they do not belong to us … They are currently riding around with Sgt. Fitzpatrick, serenading him in goat music. Though he is thankful for the company on this cool Sunday morning, he would gladly return them to their owners. He is running out of vegetables to feed them.”

Louis and Mowgli appear cool and collected in the photo. (Perhaps it wasn’t their first time in the back of the police car.) Luckily, their owner saw the post and quickly came to retrieve them. To announce their safe return, Fitzpatrick posted another cute selfie with his four- legged friends, saying, “The goats have been returned home. Louis and Mowgli enjoyed their day trip with Sgt. Fitzpatrick, but alas, all good things come to an end. Perhaps in the next budget year we can inquire as to getting some patrol goats.”

Look out, K-9 unit. These goats aren’t kidding around.

“I can’t even begin to show my thanks and gratitude for what you have done for me! Last October, I came in to get veneers on my front teeth after years of discoloration and embarrassing modeling that couldn’t be fixed. As a singer, I have always been on stage, had

photographs taken, and been in various media, but I always hid my smile in photographs and onstage. Two years ago, I had professional photographs done for my CD release, and I begged the photographer to fix the color of my teeth in the photographs — but now I want close-ups taken of my smile! It’s absolutely gorgeous! “I constantly have people coming up to me and telling me I have the perfect smile — and it’s true. For the first time in my life my smile is absolutely 100 percent perfect! Now I smile and laugh all the time, and I even recently had a promotional photo taken for my band … and I didn’t ask for any changes! “You and your staff were wonderful throughout the entire process and really made me feel at home when I was in your office — you guys are THE best!” –T. A Drink to Dental Health The Truth About Sparkling Water

Soda sales are down, and sparkling water sales are up. Health-minded individuals are turning away from sugar-filled sodas and juices, replacing them with fizzy alternatives such as La Croix and Perrier. These beverages offer all the bubbles without the guilt, but are they any safer for our teeth ? Sodas and juices are highly acidic. Combine that with sugar, and you have the ultimate recipe for tooth decay. Remove the sugars and acidic ingredients, such as citric acid, and you are left with a very different sort of drink.

we consume every day and their impact on tooth enamel. The study found that sports drinks were the worst offenders, or “extremely erosive,” with sodas trailing close behind. Researchers also found that sparkling water was “minimally erosive” when it came to the impact on tooth enamel. Dr. Edmond Hewlett, a professor with the UCLA School of Dentistry and consumer advisor with the American Dental Association, says that, sugars aside, the acidity in sparkling water is significantly less than sodas, juices and other similar drinks. The carbon dioxide bubbles in sparkling water (which become carbonic acid when consumed) are weaker than the acids found in other drinks. The bubbles are not a danger to tooth enamel. If regularly consumed over a long period of time, however, sparkling water may have

an erosive effect. But for a vast majority of the population, this is a nonissue.

The important takeaway from the JADA study is that sugar-free sparkling water is a healthier alternative to soda, juice, sports

drinks, and other beverages high in sugars and acid

content. That includes beverages marketed as diet (they may lack sugar, but they are still highly acidic). The next time you reach for a bubbly and refreshing sparkling water, you can know you are making a good choice for your body and teeth.

A 2016 study featured in the

Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) took a close look at the erosive properties of beverages
