has attained complete victory. He has even passed through the realms of the Evil One (Eph, 6:12). He has completed the work He came to do. There is absolutely no reason why a person should cease clinging to his confession of faith in a Christ who is so victorious. “In all points tempted like as we are" (4:15). In what sense was Christ tempted? It should be noted that there are two uses of this term in Scripture: (1) There is temptation in the sense of solicitation to evil, as in James 1:14, (2) There is also temptation in the sense of testing or proving as in 1 Peter 1:6. It must have been in the latter sense that Christ was tempted because God cannot be tempted to sin (Jas. 1:13) and Christ is God. He was tried in order to prove that He was the Son of God. There being no sin in Him, there was nothing in Him to re spond to the allurements of sin. The fact that always without exception Christ remained unsullied under every test makes evident the fact that He is the Son of God. "Wherefore he is able" (7:25). The great truths of Hebrews are summed up in the verse introduced by these wonderful words. The Lord Jesus Christ is able to do everything that needs to be done for His followers because He is the ever living and sinless One. The priests of the Old Testament times died. Other re ligious leaders have died. But Christ lives and is able to bestow a com plete“ salvation upon all those who will trust Him. Consider well the suf ficient Saviour presented in this verse. "Sat down on the right hand of God" (10:12). The other priests never sat down in connection with their ministrations. We read of no seat of any kind for the priests at the taber- liacle. Their work was never fin ished. But the Perfect Priest finished His work and sat down . The verses in this section emphasize the contrast between the ordinary priests and Him who is the fulfillment of the priestly work prior to His sac rifice. For the Children How J esus U sed B ible V erses (H eb . 4:14-16; M att . 4:1-11) M emory V erse : “I will not forget thy word” (Psa. 119:16). Do you sometimes fear that, be cause the Lord Jesus is sinless, He cannot understand when you pray to Him, and ask for forgiveness from your sins? One day the Saviour was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted, or tested, by the devil. For forty days and forty nights the Son of God did not eat. Probably Satan
was tempting Him with every form of sin during that time. At the end of the forty days and nights, Jesus was hungry. The smooth, round stones lying on the ground looked like small biscuits. Satan said to Jesus, “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” Jesus did not argue with the devil; He answered him from God’s Word: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth [comes] out of the mouth of God.” Satan again tempted Jesus by asking Him to prove that He was God by throwing Himself from the top of the temple. Satan quoted God’s Word incorrectly to Jesus. Again, our Lord answered His enemy with a Bible verse. The third temp tation was met by the Saviour in the same way. “Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.” God’s Word tells us that our Lord was tempted in all points just like we are, yet He did not sin. He was tempted to lie, steal, swear, cheat, have evil thoughts, quarrel, and to act in some other sinful ways. Yes, He does understand our temptations, for they were His temptations, too! This fact gives us courage to come to Him boldly in prayer, asking for His forgiveness and strength when we are tempted to sin, and even when we yield ,to the temptation. God’s Word must be our chief weap on against the devil. The Psalmist said, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Satan has no answer to God’s Word; it always brings defeat to Him. The verses which you are learning as Christian boys and girls will enable you, too, to have victory over Satan when he tempts you to sin. ----------------------------. line o f Bibles, Books, M ottoes, G reeting Cards, Calendars, Sunday School Supplies.
