WHAT’S INSIDE FBA Chairman Cathy Foley: It Was A Year Like No Other 10 OSHA Releases COVID-19 Emergency Temporary Standard WestRock’s Sewell To Keynote At SuperCorrExpo 2021 38 Bobst Unveils Latest Solutions For The Packaging Industry 6 x x 8 x x 12 x x 26 x x With a 50-year history of excellence, and over a half-million square feet under roof, and a complete suite of equipment, products and solutions in its multiple state-of-the-art facilities, Kampack Inc. (formerly known as Mannkraft) is one of the leading indepen- dent corrugated packaging producers in the Northeastern United States. Kampack Closing NJ Facility, To Open New Company In DE Kampack Inc. is closing its facility in Newark New Jersey, according to a federal WARN notice, potentially costing nearly 100 workers their jobs. The company said in the notice that up to 97 employees face termination by the end of August as the company ceases oper- ations. However, the notice said a new com- pany, Delaware Corrugated Packaging, would be created in Dover, Delaware, and Kampack expects 20-22 of its workers to accept em- ployment there. The notice said jobs and benefits would be unchanged for transferring employees, but salary rates would be “slightly lower” for hourly workers. Union workers would receive benefits including vacation pay, severance and pension rights, among others. Non-union workers would also receive certain benefits, including severance.
Director Amy Volk, shared the story of how their focus on continuous improvement has allowed them to grow their business, pursue new markets and expand their capabilities. Equipment & Automation In September 2020, Volk installed a new JS 1228 50-inch flexo fold- er gluer with rotary die cutter. “We have the first JS machine in the country and that’s something we are really proud of,” said Derek. The investment in the JS 1228 has paid off. Volk said that the print quality is flawless and the color printing has allowed the company to pursue new markets, such as e-commerce. “The increase in efficiency since the installation, has been massive,” added Amy. “An order that used to take four to five hours, now takes less than an hour. It’s amazing what we are able to pump out with the new machine.” Also included in the nearly $4.5m investment was the ancillary equipment, including Automatän AutoFeed and AutoStak robots, Sys- tec Conveyor and an upgraded waste scrap system. “The AutoFeed has been running great with nearly zero downtime. AICC Releases 2021 Sales Compensation Report
Core Competency
AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has re- leased its 12th Independent Sales Compensation Report. Based on a survey conducted over the last few months, it is the most comprehensive survey of key sales compen- sation salaries and benefits being paid by independent corrugator plants and sheets plants in the United States. This report received data from 62 independent corru- gator and sheet plants. These companies employ nearly 5,700 full-time employees spread across the entire U. S. In aggregate, these plants sold approximately $2.1 billion of corrugated products in 2020. “Knowing where you stand is vital information in the competition for people, and especially vital when look- ing at the sales function,” said AICC President Michael M. D’Angelo. “This report allows independents to benchmark themselves against others in the industry and in their re- gion. It is a critical way for AICC member companies to ensure best practices and leadership.” All participants in the survey received a complimentary copy of the report, which is available for electronic down- load for $225 for AICC Members and $415 for non-mem- bers. To order the report, visit www.AICCbox.org/store or contact Patrick Moore at pmoore@aiccbox.org.

FBA Chairman Cathy Foley: It Was A Year Like No Other
Much like the industry at large, FBA also adapted to the ever-changing environment. The association supported the industry’s ‘essential’ designation, by sending individ- ual letters to all fifty state governors. They issued a press release supporting the industry as the backbone of the American supply chain in March 2020, and established a COVID-19 information page on the FBA website. They also worked with outside consultants to understand the impact of the Coronavirus on corrugated boxes. Then they creat- ed a video to recognize industry employees for their con- tinued efforts in the face of this unprecedented challenge. In addition to the support FBA has given during the pandemic, they also worked to ensure the valuable pro- grams and services we’ve come to expect remained avail- able in a year like no other. This past year FBA: • Continued to publish traditional data service bench- marking reports and enhanced qualitative reports ex- ploring impacts on box manufacturing. These included

FBA moved from monthly to quarterly reporting in 2021. • Completed research with RIT on unitized pallet-load environmental-design factors, results of which will be shared with FBA members via webinar. • Supported the industry roll-out of the piz- za box recycling announcement with paid advertising in Pizza Today, PMQ (Pizza), pizza.com and across social media. • Partnered with Massachusetts DEP to de- velop a RecycleSmartMA newsletter on pizza recycling for all MA residents. • Engaged with allied associations to fur- ther the story of corrugated including working with: Paper Packaging Board on their sales toolkit, in holiday editori- al on e-commerce, and video support; AICC and other organizations to share COVID-19 information and respond to member requests. • It has been my honor to serve as the FBA Chairman for the past year. I am thankful for the leadership of Dennis Colley and the highly effective and capable staff as well as the members of the FBA Board of Directors. This year has been a chal- lenge, but I remain hopeful that we are coming out on the other side. I look for- ward to again being able to gather with you at an FBA event in the near future.

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE
Design & Production
Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate
Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.
This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.
The system’s main advantages are as follows:
• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. OSHA Releases COVID-19 Emergency Temporary Standard Nearly three months after its original due date, the Occu- pational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) finally released its much anticipated COVID-19 Emergency Tem- porary Standard (ETS). To the relief of many, the ETS is much more limited than anticipated and only applies to healthcare and healthcare support service workers. As the Small Business Legislative Council (SBLC) pre- viously reported, one of President Biden’s first actions upon assuming office was to issue an Executive Order on COVID-19 safety which, among other things, directed OSHA to “consider whether any emergency temporary standards on COVID-19, including with respect to masks in the workplace, are necessary, and if such standards are determined to be necessary, issue them by March 15, 2021.” OSHA indicated that it planned to release an emergency temporary standard, but missed the March 15 deadline. Then on April 27, the Office of Management and Budget’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) confirmed that OSHA had submitted an emergency temporary standard for review – teeing off more than a month of anxious anticipation from businesses and advo- cacy groups across the spectrum. Of course, for businesses, the big concern was that the emergency temporary standard would impose require-
ments that would create additional burdens and hurdles for them just as the economy has begun to fully reopen. For most businesses, these concerns were allayed by the fact that the ETS (which spans just over 900 pages) makes it clear that it only applies to “settings where any employee provides healthcare services or healthcare sup- port services.” OSHA estimates that around 10.3 million workers will be covered by the new ETS. Of course, busi- nesses with covered employees will have their work cut out for them to make sure that they are conforming with each and every requirement of the ETS, which includes provisions related to PPE, the physical workplace and paid leave for employees so they can get vaccinated and re- cover from vaccines. That said, these businesses may be relieved to find that many of the provisions are consistent with prior OSHA guidance and that they are already in compliance in many respects. For businesses that are not covered by the new ETS, OSHA simply updated its Guidance on Mitigating and Pre- venting the Spread of COVID-19 in the Workplace. Though many employers have relied on this Guidance to assist them over the last year, compliance with the OSHA Guid- ance (as opposed to the ETS) is voluntary. That said, since many jurisdictions have drawn from the guidance to create their own state and local rules – some of which are man- datory – it will be important for businesses of all stripes to make sure they are staying in compliance with the rules that apply to them. AF&PA Announces Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 Initiative Continuing its leadership in sustainability, the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) last week announced Better Practices, Better Planet 2030: Sustainable Products for a Sustainable Future, a new set of sustainability goals for the paper and wood products industry. “We have been and will continue to be a leader in sus- tainability,” said AF&PA President and CEO Heidi Brock. “The paper and wood products industry was one of the first U.S. manufacturing industries to adopt quantifiable sustainability goals back in 2011, and today these new am- bitious goals will build upon that success in the decade ahead.” Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 advances the in- dustry’s comprehensive sustainability record over the last
decade and includes a transparent reporting process for achieving each goal. “Sustainable practices are at the foundation of this industry, which manufactures essential and innovative products used by millions of Americans each day, from renewable resources,” said Graphic Packaging President and Chief Executive Officer and AF&PA Board Chair Mike Doss. “We have a strong track record of delivering on sus- tainability commitments and these goals will guide our progress further into the future.” The five Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 sustain- ability goals include reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; advancing a circular value chain through the production of renewable and recyclable products; striv- ing for zero workplace injuries, as well as reducing seri- ous injuries and fatalities (SIFs); driving water stewardship throughout manufacturing operations; and more resilient U.S. forests.
To date, AF&PA members have met or ex- ceeded many of the sustainability goals out- lined in Better Practices, Better Planet 2020, launched in 2011. Those achievements in- clude a 23.2 percent reduction in GHG emis- sions; 13.3 percent improvement in energy ef- ficiency; 38.4 percent reduction in workplace injuries; and 12 percentage point increase in wood fiber procurement from certified for- estlands. The final Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 report will be released this fall. “Importantly, our strength as an industry stems from the diversity of our people,” Brock said. “The paper and wood products industry fosters and promotes a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce by uniting people from different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives to work in partnership.” Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 rein- forces the industry’s values with a statement of principles on diversity, equity and inclu- sion (DE&I), helping AF&PA advance DE&I in the paper and wood products industry and facilitating an exchange of members’ ideas and information. American Forest & Paper Association- serves to advance U.S. paper and wood products manufacturers through fact-based public policy and marketplace advocacy. The forest products industry accounts for approx- imately four percent of the total U.S. manu- facturing GDP, manufactures nearly $300 billion in products annually and employs ap- proximately 950,000 people. Baumer hhs Introduces New ‘TeamViewer Pilot’
printing better together
Baumer hhs’s gluing and quality assurance equipment has earned a reputation worldwide for reliability. But even re- liable equipment can act up on occasion. If it does, pack- aging manufacturers need instant assistance, particularly if they have Baumer hhs systems in multi-shift or even around-the-clock operation. The company is now using “TeamViewer Pilot” as another way of providing this kind of support efficiently and effectively. Customers who want to take advantage of the added service can simply have their machine operators and tech-
nicians download the free TeamViewer Pilot app to their smartphones. Based on augmented reality, the interactive remote service app from TeamViewer AG is considered by Baumer hhs to be the ideal, re- al-time technical support tool for helping customers minimize machine down- time. With TeamViewer Pilot, machine operators can use the camera on their

smartphones to show Baumer hhs service experts the in- side workings of their production systems. Thanks to 3D object tracking, service experts can draw markers on the images, such as circles or arrows, point out details, add text annotations and share this information with machine operators via live video stream. It makes collaboration easy for both participants, enabling them to identify or rule out technical problems and discuss possible solutions. “With TeamViewer Pilot, our service experts can effec- tively help customers resolve most technical problems and get systems back up and running without delay,” said- Roberto Melim de Sousa, Head of Sales at Baumer hhs GmbH. “Should a customer still need on-site service, we can prepare for it based on the information provided in the real-time visual support session. TeamViewer Pilot gives our technicians added options for maximizing the avail- ability of our customers’ production machines. We highly recommend the remote service app for these reasons.” For more than 30 years, everything at Baumer hhs has revolved around secure gluing and the goal of meeting the high demands imposed by its customers. Whether pro- cess cold glue or hot melt, the company aims to inspire its customers with high-quality products and service Customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are al- ready using TeamViewer Pilot and the Baumer hhs is work- ing to establish the app among customers globally. It can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for iOS and Android smartphones.

This second phase of the ‘continuous improvement plan’ will cost another $3.5m for the rotary die cutter, conveyor and robots. its sustainability investment. “We will be generating so much solar power that we are actually working on providing power to a local middle school that’s about a mile away,” said Volk. Along with the solar panels, the company has replaced 402 light fixtures throughout the plant, result- ing in a 66 percent decrease in energy consumption and more than $54,000 in elec- trical savings per year. Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.
