TOPICS FOR STUDY (1) A re m iracles always attend ed by faith in Him? v. 37. (2) W hat has God provided as th e basis for faith in Him? (3) Are th e re any believers in these days who are hinder.ed from con fessing Christ in th e ir daily lives, and why? (4) W hat did Jesus mean by His statem ent, “He th a t seeth Me, seeth Him th a t sent Me” ? (5) W hat does Jesus mean when He says, “The Word shall judge men” ? (6) Was Jesus, as th e God-Man, obed ient to th e au tho rity of His F a th er? SUGGESTIVE COMMENT By Prof. Eli Reece Jesus was now standing in th e dark shadow of th e cross. In spite of th is aw ful tragedy so soon to be enacted, He has massed abundant proof by signs and m iracles which a tte st His deity before a wil fully blind group of P harisaic scholars who claim to be b etter and know more th an He, th e Son of God. Jesus opened “The Gate to Glory” to them a t th is tim e and th e light stream ed down upon th e ir pathway as He spoke th e word of tru th and did these signs and m iracles in th e ir pres ence; bu t “ th e god of th is world h ath blinded th e m inds of them th a t believe no t.” The whole question rested upon th e ir a ttitu d e tow ard th e person and work of Jesus. He had removed all reason for doubt as to His Messiahship. Instead of th e ir meeting th is responsi bility by accepting Him as th e ir Mes siah, they tu rn against Him w ith b it te r resentm ent. There is no w arning in Scripture against extravagance in exalting Jesus for such is impossible. These poor NOW IS THE TIME—ONLY FIVE

ship w ith th e Lord and w ith His follow ers, and loss of fru itag e in service (Prov. 29:25, 26). “T h e f e a r o f m a n b rln g e th a s n a re ; b u t w h o so p u tte th h is t r u s t in th e L o rd s h a ll be sa fe . M any se e k th e r u le r ’s fa v o r; b u t e v e ry m a n ’s ju d g m e n t co m eth fro m th e L o rd .” The snare of pride and a desire for th e praise of men have been th e found ation of th e downfall of many a man. Our Lord had spoken of th is in His message in th e 26 th verse of th is chap ter, which is well worth comm itting to memory: “I f a n y m a n se rv e m e, le t h im fo llo w m e; a n d w h e re I am , th e re s h a ll a ls o m y s e rv a n t b e; if a n y m a n se rv e m e, h im w ill iny F a th e r h o n o u r.’’ Jesus has identified H imself so defi nitely w ith the F ath e r th a t it is im possible for any honest h ea rt to doubt. In th e 13th verse we find Him receiv ing honors as th e King of Israel. John testifies th a t th e re came from Heaven th e Voice th a t had been heard at His baptism (v. 28). Jesus testifies of H imself th a t if He be lifted up He will draw all men unto Him. Then He m u st be th e Prom ised One. He says in the 45th verse, “He th a t seeth Me, seeth Him th a t sent Me.” How could th a t be unless He was th e Messiah? How could He call H imself the “Light of th e W orld” were He not th e Mes siah? (v. 46). How could He claim to be th e rep re sentative of the F a th e r as recorded in th e 47th, 48th, 49th and 50th verses were He not God’s Son? Are you looking for proof th a t Jesus Christ was th e Son of God, who came from God, who spoke for God, who represents H imself as One w ith Goa? You will find it all here in these few verses, and will be compelled to be lieve— as did the rulers— in spite of th e opposition against Him. Honor Him, then, by an open and above-board testimony, always, every where. Do it gladly. Do. it joyfully, and do all w ithin your power to bring others to see Him, to believe in Him, and to accept Him.
