the tragic thing of it was th a t he- resigned over the protest of the president of the school. In th a t same departm ent, at th is present hour, the same kind of teaching and more of it, and worse, is going on. For example, in the textbooks now used, on page 82 of “ INTRODUCTION TO THE SCIENCE OF SOCIOLOGY,” hy P ark and Burgess, we find a fair sample of evolution: “T h e m o st c u rio u s of a ll m o n k e y t r a its sh o w n b y th e n ew b o rn b a b y is its in a b ility to so m u ch a s h o ld up its h e a d on its h e lp le ss little neck . On page 57 of this same book we have another sta te ment: “EVOLUTIONARY EXPLANATIONS ACCOUNT FOR THE GROSSLY ANIMALISTIC ELEMENTS IN HUMAN NATURE.” N . You have been acting like a bear or. a dog, or a cat, or a cow, or a hyena, and now you know why,— because th a t is what you came from'. Some of you women know why you are having trouble w ith your husbands,— it’s th e bear in him. And some of you men know w hat’s the m a tte r w ith your 1 wife when she throw s cups and saucers at you,— it’s the hyena in her. Therefore, young men and young ladies, you had better study how much bear m eat and hyena blood you are tying up w ith before you ask a preacher to m arry you. “Can’t Get Textbooks” They will come back and tell you, “We can’t get text books w ithout evolution in them .” My first answer then is, we will do w ithout textbooks. I would ra th e r my boy would be in heaven w ithout knowing one thing about bugs, lizards, apes, or chimpanzees, th an to be in hell w ith a basket full of degrees and a post-gradu ate in all the sciences on earth. But th a t doesn’t have to be. There is no conflict between tru e science a n d ' tru e revelation. My second answer is,— w hat have we come to when we havel 40,000 stud en ts in our B aptist schools in the South; we have raised m illions of dollars for buildings and equip ments; we have been in the business of education for 100 years, and will any one dare to say th a t w ith all our wealth, w ith all of our numbers, w ith all of our B aptist scholar ship, we are unable to produce textbooks th a t are. orthodox and th a t do no t deny the Word of God? Then, if th a t is tru e, in Heaven’s name, we ought to go out of business. It is tim e we down here in the South should fiuit allowing Chicago University to w rite our textbooks. As certain as the n igh t follows the day, if our boys and girls believe what th e textbook says, on one thing, they will believe w hat it says on another thing. The most dangerous thing th a t can come to th e boy or girl in th a t age of doubt in th e ir college careers is to put in th eir hands a book th a t denies the very fundam ental principles of Christianity.
