About 50 people from the region gathered last Sunday for a Greek Orthodox Easter celebration hosted by Sotiris and Popi Moshonas, owners of LeVieux Château in Hawkesbury. Easter preparations begin Holy Thursday when the tradi- tional Easter bread, tsoureki, is baked, and eggs are dyed
red, the colour of life, a symbol of the blood of Christ. Eggs are also considered to be signs of good look, if they do not crack. Prior to Easter, a strict dairy-free diet is observed. During the celebrations, the menu includes traditional fare, such as lamb and feta cheese, as well as an octopus salad.

Tree-planting bee The Nature Conservancy of Canada is organizing a volunteer tree planting activ- ity at Mont Rigaud May 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To register, http://support.naturecon- servancy.ca/site/Calendar/659440615?view =Detail&id=102721. The Chemin-Saint-Georges Nature Re- serve is a wooded natural area dominated by century old sugar maple and American beech trees. The butternut, an endangered species, is also at home on these eastern slopes of Mont Rigaud. Help NCC staff restore an old access road by planting native tree and shrub species. This revegetation project will reduce visitor impacts to the nature reserve, assist with property management and help conserve the natural environment and species at risk. Event participants will have an opportunity to visit the nature reserve and to learn more about the ecology of species living there from NCC staff. The activity will be held even in the event of rain. Be sure to wear full-length clothes and to bring work gloves, sturdy footwear, rubber boots, a raincoat and insect repel- lent. Please make sure you eat a hearty breakfast, and pack a lunch and enough drinking water for the day. Snacks and bev- erages will be provided by NCC to keep you energized and hydrated. The activity will be held in French, but the organizers are bilin- gual and everyone is welcome. Information about where to meet will be provided once you have registered. !%. ŏ /ŏ wanted Do you know someone in the Hawkes- bury region who is more MacGyver than Mike Holmes? “Our goal is to uncover great characters with a bizarre sense of home‘im- provement.’We are looking for jerry-rigged solutions that are at complete odds with mainstream expectations,” says Tim Alp.
