cent increase over the 363 vehicles record- ed at the May 2012 event. And people were eager to get to the HHW Day. “We used to start at 9 a.m., and people started arriving at 8:30. So we decided to start at 8:30, and now people start lining up at 8,” remarked Lefebvre. Paint, motor oil, fluorescent light tubes, oil filters, batteries, propane tanks and an- tifreeze are just some of the products that are routinely deposited. “One year, we had some PCBs brought here,”relates Lefebvre. The products are taken away by Drain- All Ltd., a company that collects and han- dles hazardous products. The addition of a second household hazardous waste drop-off in 2009 had the desired result -- the volume of dangerous products diverted from landfill disposal has increased dramatically. Volumes of diverted HHW have gone from about 20 tonnes annually to about 30 tonnes since the three municipalities decided to double the number of collec- tion days.

HAWKESBURY | For more and more area residents in Hawkesbury, Champlain and East Hawkesbury, spring cleaning chores have started to include a trip to the Hawkesbury municipal garage. That is where the annual spring house- hold hazardous waste drop-off day is held every May. Traffic at the collections has been steadily increasing over the years, with the 2013 response being one of the best ever. “I have been in the ‘business’ for a lot of years and I have never seen this before,” said Hawkesbury area waste recycling co- ordinator Robert Lefebvre. Last Saturday, some 494 vehicles drove through the gates, as people from the three municipalities dropped off an as- sortment of waste materials for safe dis- posal. That number represented a 36 per

Two Champlain Township residents have been charged for their alleged roles in the theft of drivers tests from the Hawkesbury test centre earlier this year. Debra Ranger, 41, was charged with theft under $5,000 and criminal breach of trust while Michael Nittolo, also 41, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime. The arrests were made following an investigation by Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police Constable Lise Durocher. The investigation began after the detachment received a complaint from the test centre to the effect that a former em- ployee had allegedly stolen written drivers tests in order to sell them. An investigation by Constable Lise Durocher ensued for the following months, resulting in the arrest of the defendants April 21. Police are seeking the public’s help in finding the person or persons who set a fire at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute early last Thursday morning. At last report, the Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police detachment had no sus- pects as investigators continued to probe the incident. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Detective Constable Alain Potvin at 613-632-2729. Nobody was hurt after the fire was set at about 1:15 a.m. May 2 in a laboratory at the high school. VCI arson

Issues with burning Fire is such a versatile element. It can be a friend, a foe and, at this time of year, a cheap and effective cleaner. Now that spring has finally arrived, many are stirred by primeval urges to get down and dirty, and start a fire outdoors. Ah, yes, there is something reassuring about the smell of smoke emanating from smouldering dead grass, leaves and all the other items that until recently were covered in ice and snow. Of course, one must never throw caution to the wind. Before getting out the matches, check with your municipal office. Most municipalities require that you get a permit before you burn, and during dry spells, our local govern- ments often prohibit all outdoor fires entirely. If you start a fire, you are responsible for its impact. Flames can travel quickly, and can cover ground as fast as, well, a wild fire. Large-scale blazes are frightening sights. The heat created by a large piece of hot land is tremendous. Runaway fires have been known to consume buildings and force the closure of highways. While burning grass is a rite of spring for many, there is little evidence that a spring burn is beneficial. One myth is that burning makes the new grass come in greener. In fact, the turf will be the same colour whether or not you burned. It merely looks greener because of the contrast against the scorched earth. Plus, flames can destroy the habitat of small creatures such as voles, mice and certain bird species. And we all know that the incessant denuding of wooded areas has resulted in the loss of irreplaceable habitat for a multitude of flora and fauna. It is true that the grounds do look a lot nicer and neater following a cleansing burn. On the other hand, you could merely put away the matches and let nature take its course. While we are on the topic of cleaning, at the risk of flogging a dead horse, have you noticed the huge volume of litter that has been cropping up everywhere? Ditches and parking lots are clogged with all sorts of illegally dumped waste products. For rural residents, one of the more unpleasant rites of spring is the annual clean-up of ditches near their property lines. You have enough things to do without having to pick up other people’s debris, let loose by Neanderthal cretins who have no regard for other people and our planet. It seems that littering has become more widespread over the last few years. Perhaps this is another malaise we can blame on technology and/or social media. The argument could be made that because people spend so much time communicating through gad- gets that they have lost touch with the rest of the world and the tangible effects of their actions. They drive down the road, tweeting and texting, oblivious to others and the impact their trash has on their fellow citizens. Of course, there are all sorts of statistics available on this problem because, thankfully, there are people who are willing to sift through trash, and compile data on garbage. Past studies have shown that cigarette butts account for about half of all litter, but that number may be shifting now that more people have kicked the smoking habit. After butts, the most common tossed items are fast food containers and paper. The most disturbing number is that 75 per cent of people have admitted to littering in the past five years. So if you are trying to find a solution to littering, take a look in the mirror. Spring cleaning

While Ottawa River levels have been low in the Hawkesbury area, it has been a com- pletely different story upstream. Here is what the Lefaivre-Montebello ferry owner Guy Deschamps had to build in order to serve his customers on the Fassett dock: a loading ramp.

Drivers advised to slow down for turtles there are numerous turtle crossing signs installed on highways throughout Ontario, thanks to the efforts of Turtle S.H.E.L.L Tor- tue (a registered charitable organization – www.turtleshelltortue.org). André-St. Cyr and David Seburn on behalf of the organization.

The investigation by Constable Anne Charbonneau found that Rodger was driving his blue 2010 Yamaha ZCX four- wheeler when, for an unknown reason, he lost control and was ejected from his ATV. The driver slid on the road before hitting a wooden rural mailbox. The accident is still under investigation by Constable Steve Roy, a technical traffic collision investigator at the Hawkesbury detachment. Motorists are being advised to keep an eye out for turtles, which now that the spring has arrived, are emerging from their winter hibernation. Turtles move for many reasons – to change wetlands or for the females to go to their usual nesting site – but their move- ment generally means they must attempt the hazardous trek across roads and high- ways. Unfortunately, a turtle’s shell is no match for motor vehicles and hundreds of turtles are killed on roads every year. Such traffic fatalities are devastating for the tur- tle population, as they tend to target adult females looking for places to lay their eggs. By killing one female, about 25 generations of turtles have disappeared. In Ontario seven of eight species of tur- tles have been classified as species at risk. These species will continue to decline un- less they are helped. The good news is that

“If you see a turtle crossing the road, please help it across. First, make sure that it’s safe to help (do not endanger yourself or others by walking into heavy traffic). Move the turtle in the direction that it is travel- ling – this might not be towards the water. Turtles know where they are going and will turn around and march right back into traf- fic if you return them to the side of the road they came from. “

“We can all do our part by paying close at- tention to the road and shoulders in these designated turtle crossing areas and near any pond, marsh, river, or lake areas from now until the end of September. Paying at- tention to the road can save a turtle’s life or help prevent a car accident,” write Michele

in Glengarry. Now in its 125 th year, the fair will this year showcase the award-winning band, Emerson Drive, the band that is expected to attract 10,000 fans to the Kenyon Agri- cultural Society’s Fairgrounds June 22 at 7 p.m. The dynamic Canadian contemporary country group has been electrifying audi- ences across North America with songs like

125 th anniversary — so we wanted to go whole hog and bring in the very best,” said KAS President Dale Murray. “It’s our way of saying thank you to the people of Eastern Ontario for supporting the Maxville Fair for so many years.” The Kenyon Agricultural Society was founded in 1888 with the goal of enhancing agricultural practices in the region through education and improved animal husbandry. And these traditions can still be seen today at the fair’s agricultural exhibits and annual Holstein Show. But agricultural fairs have always been about more than the business of farming. They’ve also been a place to re- new old friendships and take a break from the rigors of everyday life. And Maxville Fair 2013 is no exception. In addition to the Em- erson Drive concert, fairgoers will be able to enjoy a 125 th anniversary parade, a car- riage show, a western performance, an Eng- lish horse and pony event, a talent show, a carnival midway and much more.
