THE CHOSEN PEOPLE, THE LAND AND THE BOOK Jewish News Notes Epoch Making Zionist Congress The Thirteenth Zionist Congress, which met at Carlsbad, Czecho-Slovakia, August 6-19, was one of the most im portant in all of the series of Congresses. It will leave its impress on the development of the Zionist movement as few others. This new trend comes about through the decision to invite other Jewish bodies, non-Zionist organizations that yet are deeply concerned in the building up of Pales tine, to a part in the Jewish Agency, the body of Jews that by the terms of the British mandate for Palestine is to rep resent the Jewish people in conjunction with the British ad ministration in the Holy Land. The Zionist Executive till now has formed the Jewish Agency, to the dismay and dis tress of many Jews who cannot agree with the political aspect of Zionist policy. By the change in the now to be made constitution of the Agency, other Jewish bodies will have representation in the re-habilitation of Palestine. Jews of all classes and parties will thus be enabled to work to gether for the upbuilding of the Jewish home land /’ Chair of Jewish Missions in Moody Bible Institute Thos. M. Chalmers, in speaking of the recently estab lished Chair of Jewish Missions in Moody Bible Institute, says: “One of the fundamental features of the recently in augurated course is to provide instruction in Yiddish, the modern Jewish dialect. In addition to the study of Yid dish, the Hebrew language will also be taught, so that the students in the Pastors Course as well as the Jewish Missions Course will have instruction in the Hebrew Bible similar to that provided in all our theological seminaries. A course in Rabbinics will be included, in which select por tions from the Talmud and rabbinical commentaries will be taken up. Jewish Feasts and Customs and Jewish History from the time of the Maccabees to the present day will also be presented, as well as the study of Messianic Prophecy, especially a consideration of what the prophets said con cerning the Jewish Messiah. The Annual Report of the British Society for the Propo- gation of the Gospel among the Jews is before us, with its record of the achievements of the past year: This Society, which is one of the oldest Jewish Missions in operation, is conducting Jewish Evangelistic Work throughout all Palestine, “To reach Israel with the Gospel in the land of their fathers” is their sole aim. Quoting from this report we read, “Our mission is to bear testimony to the Jewish people in Palestine, wherever we can reach them, of the unsearchable riches of Christ, His abound ing love, and inexhaustible mercy. We are particularly in terested at the present time in the “returning remnant” from the different parts of the world, who form, as it were, the “Restoration” ; and we are visiting their homes, shops, institutions, and synagogues, in the different cities, vil lages and colonies, as well as those who are laboring on the highways on the mountains of Galilee, Judea and Ep hraim.” Here, on the slope of historic old Mount Carmel, where Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal, is located the Bible School of the Society, which is carrying on its witness to the “returning remnant.” A Reading Room at Haifa makes it possible to reach thousands of Jews yearly with the Gospel message.
