Badgemore Anniversary Book

DEVELOPING

Men’s Captain John Tugwell :

Allan Harries: “The two-way interaction between management and the committees. This was particularly pertinent during the planning phase of the course improvement plan, when the men’s and ladies committees were actively engaged in the process.”

“Investment made into the club and the course. Badgemore used to be considered by members of other nearby courses as ‘Mickey Mouse’ – but no longer.” “There were three attempts by the membership to buy Badgemore and make it a members’ club. All failed, including the 1997 attempt to purchase the club when up to £4million was offered. That was when the Connell family purchased the club. Looking back, it was a good thing that these attempts failed since the members could not have made the investments that Jon has made.” “I couldn’t believe that it was possible to transform the club (both on and off the course) the way it has been.”

“I first became aware of Badgemore in the mid '70s when I was a teenager. My friend Tim played golf with his girlfriend’s father, but despite trying to persuade me to have a go I had other interests to pursue. Then, suddenly, 45 years later, I find myself Men’s Captain in the club’s 50th anniversary year! A great honour indeed. Across over 20 years as a member, I have seen many improvements to the course, but one constant throughout has been the friendliness and comradeship among members. As celebrations of our anniversary commence and with more developments already planned, this is a very exciting time to be

“When we joined in 1981, the club was perceived as being a slightly brash newcomer to the exclusive world of golf in the area. Members of other local clubs tended to ‘look down their noses’ at Badgemore in a rather condescending way. How times have changed!” RESPECTED

Allan Harries: “The vast improvement in our reputation among the general golfing community. We are no longer looked down on by other clubs as the brash newcomers!”
