The Cause of Most Headaches Headaches can range from minor nagging pains to full-blown migraines that knock you off your feet for a day or two. Any headache, whether tremendous pain or not, should be a warning sign that the muscles around your spine and neck may be too tight and tense. Prolonged muscle tension may cause you to feel stiff and achy. One may feel pain in the shoulders, neck, upper back and even radiating out to the upper arms. Most people who have headaches complain about having neck and shoulder pain. The most intense pain usually lies directly in the upper back sides of the neck. The pain then radiates into the shoulder area. This is why many people who have headaches treat themselves to frequent neck and shoulder massages. Relief That Works Physical therapy goes beyond massages to evaluate and treat the root cause of your pain. Muscular tightness may lead to poor joint movement and weakness. Our physical therapy experts are trained in specialized, hands-on treatments to quickly reduce your pain. Furthermore, you can enjoy the added benefits of corrected posture and improved motion. We help to train you in gentle exercises and self-help techniques to relieve neck pain and headaches independently and prevent the problem from reoccurring. Physical therapy can help you to relieve the tightness and tension in your muscles, helping you live a happy, pain-free life.

Relieve That Nagging Headache Naturally! FOCUS ONNECK PAINTO RELIEVE HEADACHES

The neck can be a hidden and debilitating source of headaches. Very often neck pain and headaches go hand- in-hand, leading to a miserable time coping with everyday activities. According to the National Institute of Health Statistics, neck pain and headaches are the second most common form of pain experienced by Americans, with 59% reporting it affected their enjoyment of life. Some headaches are often grouped under the term “cervicogenic headache” meaning that the primary source is from the neck. There are well mapped out patterns of headaches that come from the different parts of the neck, shoulder and upper back areas. The discs between your bones (vertebrae) and joints in the upper neck often contribute to headaches. Even headaches located in the forehead or behind the eyes are often referred pains stemming from problem areas in the neck and base of the skull. The joints connecting the top three vertebral levels of the neck handle almost 50% of the total motion of the entire neck. This means they absorb a lot of repetitive strain. These joints bear the main load of the weight of the head

(about that of a bowling ball). With fatigue, poor posture, injuries, disc problems, arthritis, muscular stress and even prior surgeries, the wear and tear on this critical region of your body can prove too much, resulting in pain. It is also possible that you may develop a narrowing of the spinal canal itself. Since the spinal cord runs through the spine, a narrowing of the canal or where the nerves exit, can lead to a condition called spinal stenosis. There is much that can be done to treat neck pain and headaches. Our expert physical therapists have years of experience helping people with neck pain and headaches. By finding the root cause of your neck pain and headaches we can relieve your pain quickly, reduce the need for medication and get you back to the activities you enjoy. Discover how our team of specialists at FYZICALTherapy & Balance Centers can eliminate your neck pain and headaches allowing you to live a happy, active and pain- free life. CDP testing efficiently isolates and quantifies the impairments underlying your patients’ balance problems. This impairment information is used to focus treatment on specific problems, effectively addressing deficits leading to improved outcomes.

Practical CDP results can be used by multiple disciplines to guide treatment decision-making and provide superior case management to patients with balance andmobility disorders. CDP can identify your specific visual and motor functions and how they work together to keep you balanced. The information that CDP gathers helps your therapist understand the best path of treatment. This helps you become mobile and balanced much faster than traditional tests. Proven NeuroComCDP test protocols have a 30 year record of clinical use supported by peer- reviewed research. REGAIN YOUR CONFIDENCE WITH VESTIBULAR REHAB

One of the most common concerns in patients with dizziness and vertigo whocompleteavestibular rehabilitationprogram is, “Willmy results last?” Research suggests that, with the proper post-therapy exercise, patients who successfully complete vestibular rehab will maintain their positive results long after leaving a physical therapist’s office. What Happens Next? The aim of vestibular rehab is to improve function andbalancewhile reducingdizziness. This isespecially important inolder patients who already bear a higher risk of falls as a result of age-related neuropathy, vestibular dysfunction and a host of other conditions. As a result, those who have experienced a positive outcome as a result of vestibular rehab are often reluctant to leave the care of clinicians. To assuage thisanxietyandextend theoutcomeof rehab, physical therapists will often prescribe a home-based exercise program that reinforces therapeutic processes. Balance Issues Do Not Improve On Their Own. Bottom line, if you are experiencing dizziness and vertigo, you will not experience improvement without intervention. This is especially true in elderly patients whose functionaloutcomesarevital to theirqualityof life.Vestibularrehabilitation asperformedbyaphysical therapist is themosteffectivewayofproviding these outcomes and a home-based exercise program upon release from

physical therapy is the best way to maintain them over time.

Last year around Christmas time I fell off a ladder and tore my ACL. After my knee surgery, I started using the Juvent, and I could almost immediately see a difference in my pain level. The Juvent got me to a better place quicker, by taking away the pain and reducing the swelling. Guillermo Pasarin, M.D. It is virtually the perfect machine! I had major abdominal surgery a couple of months ago and I could not get any of my usual exercises in. Then I started using Juvent every day. I barely had to use any of my prescribed pain medication and I felt better quicker than I had from previous surgeries. I LOVE this machine! Michael Bauerschmidt, M.D., M.B.A.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DRYNEEDLING Dry needling is a new treatment for muscle, nerve, and connective tissue pain that has proven effective for a wide variety of patients.

How Does It Work? There have been a number of recent medical studies that help prove dry needling stimulates biochemical and physiological changes in the body which help reduce pain. Dry needling is not synonymous with the term acupuncture. Acupuncture is derived from Oriental Medicine with the purpose of redirecting the flow of energy (“Qi”) along traditional Chinese meridians for the treatment of disease. Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based intervention for the treatment of pain and dysfunction in some muscle, bone, joint, and nerve conditions. The term “Dry” is used because there is no medication or fluid being injected into the body. Electric Dry Needling may be used by connecting electrodes to the needles and stimulating the tissue at low frequencies. This is an invasive technique which will only be considered if a patient has sub-acute or chronic symptoms which have not responded favorably to conservative methods. Why Consider Dry Needling Some dry needling techniques treat a broader landscape of the central nervous system. This is called non-trigger point treatment. Instead of inserting needles only in the area of pain, the practitioner may instead insert needles in areas around but not directly on the point of pain. This technique relies on the idea that pain is the result of a greater nerve or muscular issue, not a focused one only in the main area of pain. Physical therapists use dry needling with the goal of releasing or inactivating trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion. Preliminary research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up the patient’s return to full activity. Dry needling provides relief for some muscular pain and stiffness. In addition, easing the trigger points improves flexibility and increases range of motion. That’s why this method is often used to treat sports injuries, muscle pain, and even fibromyalgia pain.
