Saint-Felix Road repair settled... for now ALEXIA MARSILLO alexia.marsillo@eap.on.ca "$56"- * 54 r /&84

Things got heated at the last Clarence- Rocklandmunicipal council meeting after over one hundred people signed a petition regarding repair work for Saint-Felix Road. Over 40 people showed up to themunici- pal council meeting in Clarence-Rockland on Monday, February 5, wearing “S.O.S Saint-Felix” tags. These tags are referring to the state of Saint-Felix road, which left residents to submit a petition to the council, with over 100 signatures, demanding more be done to fix the road. As it stands, themunicipality’s 2018 bud- get allows for surface treatment on approxi- mately half, which is 1.5 km, of Saint-Felix road – beginning at Drouin Road and going east. The budgeted financing for this work is $ 306 000. There will also be three signifi- cant culverts that will be replaced, due to drainage issues, at a cost of about 110 000$. The residents representing this cause were unhappy with the fact that council has decided to repair the part of Saint-Felix road that is less damaged, instead of the section

of the road that does not even have asphalt. Residents have also raised concerns, how- ever, over the safety of the road, especially for buses and ambulances. “The paved section [the section the City will be repairing] is a question of security, especially school buses, and that is what is most important,” said Gilles Lecompte, the organizer of the petition. “In my opinion, theMayor andMr. Levert [ward 7 councilor] have fulfilled our needs.” The Saint-Felix Road repair work is part of the municipality’s ten-year-plan, which, when adopted, placed an emphasis on re- pairing “medium-level repair” roads over roads that are in worse condition. The rea- soning behind this, according to the ad- ministration, is that of getting the most for their buck. The repair work on Saint-Felix Road will begin in early summer, starting with the replacement of the culverts to deal with the drainage issues. Once that is done, the surface treatment will begin. “Let’s hope

—photo fournie

these repairs are done before the fall, and it is certain we will all benefit from it in 2019,” said Lecompte. “It’s better than what you have now,” said Mayor Guy Desjardins at the council meeting. “We will have something done this summer for sure, and if we are all back here next year, we will consider doing the

rest and look at it at budget, that’s all I can tell you for now.” The representatives for S.O.S Saint-Felix assured they wouldmost definitely be back next year. “For the rest of the road, we will see,” said Lecompte. “It is up to us to organize ourselves again and do another presentation at council when the time comes.”
