Turkey Daj

J uan is his name (that’s Spanish for John) and he lives in Ecuador, South America . . . And even though he had a turkey tied to one of the poles holding up his house, he knew nothing about Thanksgiv­ ing Day. But he was thankful. Juan’s house is a bamboo hut on a little plot of ground which was cleared out of the green jungle. Every so often Juan takes liis machette and cuts away the bush which keeps on growing. Skinny little chickens run around the yard and the family also owns a pig. Surrounding the house are a few banana trees. Juan and his brothers and sisters live in one room and in another open room they cook their meals. His dad has two big blowguns and he uses poisoned darts in them to kill birds and small ani­ mals. Every once iri a while Juan has a little sugar cane stalk to chew on. Food isn’t very important in the jun­ gle. I wonder what Juan would think if he could see your dinner on Thanksgiving Day! But Juan’s big black eyes were shining this day. He was glad, happy and thankful. He gathered up two eggs and with one in each hand he started out to see his friend. He walked through the hot jungle, his bare feet stepping carefully on and over twigs and logs, on his way to the river. He passed the burial houses; these are houses where someone has died and then been buried under the house and then the folks moved. Just before he got to the river he passed the witch doctor’s house, but Juan wasn’t afraid of the witch doctor any more. Pretty, soon Juan came to the river. He held the eggs above his head and waded through the river. The water came way up to h is chest and although it was very swift, Juan walked steadily. You see Juan wasn’t afraid of witch doctors or bugs or | rapids in the river. Then he got to
