charges. Using electronic devices while driving is a serious safety problem. Most drivers know that texting while driving is a danger- ous behaviour, but many still use their cell phones and other mobile devices when they are behind the wheel, putting them- selves and others at risk, the detachment stresses. Many drivers see distracted driving as risky behaviour when others do it, but fail to recognize their own vulnerability. The truth is that the vast majority of driv- ers over-estimate their skills behind the wheel and under-estimate the risk associat- edwith distracted driving. They believe that because they’ve done it numerous times before and nothing bad has happened that nothing bad will occur. “That simply is not the case,” says Deputy Commissioner Larry Beeches, Provincial Commander of the Traf- fic Safety and Operational Support. Of the 67 persons killed in fatal vehicle collisions that occurred in the OPP jurisdic- tion this year, 19 were victims of an inatten- tive driver. “These families have had their lives changed forever and for what”? Commissioner Chris Lewis says, “It’s not about the number of tickets we issue. It’s about saving lives. We’d be far more satis- fied if we didn’t have to write any tickets because the offences weren’t being com- mitted, but that’s not what is happening.” However, Lewis wants to remind all mo- torists that “enforcement of the distraction legislation is a priority for our people every day and if caught, you can expect to be charged.”

HAWKESBURY | It seems many drivers feel they are adequately skilled enough to drive while texting or talking on their cell phone. From April 15 to 21, the Ontario Provin- cial Police (OPP) conducted a distracted driving campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of multi-tasking at the wheel, and to reduce the number of colli- sions caused by distraction. In Prescott County, 14 drivers were charged while driving on roads patrolled by the Hawkesbury OPP detachment. Across the eastern region, officers laid 457 distracted driving charges and seven careless driving charges. Province-wide, OPP officers laid 2,141 distraction-related
