Growth Throughout 2018 Looking Into Our Firm’s Future

We at Sioli Alexander Pino started 2018 feeling as though we were still digging ourselves out from Hurricane Irma ... However, as we recovered from the stormduring the early months of this year, we were fortunate to experience significant growth. In February 2018, we moved into a larger office, allowing us to increase the size of our team to better serve our clients. Over the years, we’ve grown into a full-service boutique law firm, focusing on building long-lasting relationships with our clients. In support of our attorneys, we have a hardworking, knowledgeable staff. Their dedicated time and energy and focus on the behind-the-scenes details contributes to delivering a “wow” experience. As a firm, we take a personal interest in our clients and each of their cases. Our attorneys are very proactive in defense of our clients’ claims and are responsive to our clients’ requests. We are a firm that backs up our talk with consistent action — we get things done, and we do it right. One of the initial hurdles we faced in our growth is the size fromwhich we started: just our three original partners. When we immediately began approaching large companies as a three-attorney law firm claiming to provide better representation than bigger firms, it was a little daunting, as the benefits may not have been as clear to the naked eye. While some were skeptical, we didn’t let that deter us. If anything, it steeled our resolve to succeed and highlighted our advantages. For example, as a boutique-size firm, we easily and swiftly identify and adapt to legal trends, and are able to implement cutting-edge strategies and technologies to obtain the best results. We also have the advantage of our name partners’ involvement in virtually all of our cases. But ultimately, one of the keys to our success includes the awareness that every company, large or small, is made up of people just like us — people who you have to understand and connect with in order to be effective. Our firmmay have originally been small, but we at first understood, and still do today, the importance of personal connections.

Alexander Pino is committed to continuing to give all of our clients the same top-of-the-line service they’ve come to expect. For the past several months, we’ve started planning an office space expansion that will be completed in early 2019. This new office space will help us sustain the continued growth of the firm. As I watch the firm grow, I couldn’t be happier. Like many businesses, we have our fair share of busy and hectic days, but it’s clear everyone here enjoys the atmosphere. One thing I like is that practically every other morning someone from the firm blasts an email that they brought in something tasty for the whole firm to enjoy for a morning or afternoon treat. I think it’s amazing that people can come to work at a place like this, where there’s a great environment and they can feel appreciated for their dedication. We couldn’t have become the successful firmwe are today without every one of our teammembers. I also believe that our growth positively affects other businesses and individuals. Our firm can serve as an example for anyone who wants to undertake a new challenge. Seeing someone make that risky jump and not only survive, but also thrive, encourages others to think, “Hey, I’m not stuck in my situation. I can do this.” Whether it’s founding their own law firm or business or blazing a new path in their existing company, hearing someone’s success story has the power to give anyone the courage to overcome, accomplish, and flourish. acknowledged as the Fourth-Fastest-Growing Law Firm in the United States. The firm is humbled to have received this recognition, as we were in the company of some outstanding competition. I want to take a moment and express gratitude to our amazing clients and teammembers who have accompanied us on this journey. Thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support, along with all the blessings for a safe and Happy Holiday Season and Prosperous New Year! In October 2018, we attended the Law Firm 500 Conference and Awards. There, we were

Chip and Dan Heath’s ‘Made to Stick’ Uncovers What Makes Ideas Matter H ave you ever wondered why certain stories that have no basis in fact get passed around like wildfire? Whether they’re rumors, urban legends, or conspiracy theories, these tales can often gain more traction than important ideas and facts. In their book “Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die,” Chip and Dan Heath explore the qualities that give ideas relevance and pass-around value. “An accurate but useless idea is still useless,” they write. This point is key to understanding why people get excited about certain ideas and ignore others. The Heaths argue that the presentation of ideas can have just as much of an impact on their “stickiness” as the content of the ideas. After analyzing hundreds of examples, they note, “We began to see the same themes, the same attributes, reflected in a wide range of successful ideas.”

“Made to Stick” explains those attributes using myriad examples to illustrate how stickiness works in the real world. Early in the book, the Heaths share six key principles, demonstrating how good ideas are made valuable and exciting by their simplicity, unexpectedness, concreteness, and credibility; are capable of rousing emotions; and are often presented in the form of stories. While these principles are relatively straightforward, they are often subverted in an effort to use business jargon and other neutered forms of language. The Heaths deploy John F. Kennedy’s famous speech about putting aman on the moon as an example of a compellingly relayed idea. “Had John F. Kennedy been a CEO, he would have said, ‘Our mission is to become the international leader in the space industry throughmaximum team-centered innovation and strategically targeted aerospace initiatives,’” they explain. Nobody would have been excited about that.

If you’ve ever thought that you had a great idea but couldn’t get your employees to buy into it, a lack of stickiness may be the cause. Understanding how to present your ideas in an inspiring way could unlock the key to increased productivity and growth like you’ve never achieved before. The next time you present an idea to your team, a group of conference attendees, or any other audience, ask yourself if that idea will stick. If it won’t, you’re just wasting your time. If you need a little guidance on how to make your ideas punch a little harder, “Made to Stick” should be on your holiday book list.

girls. Everyone in the office participates in one way or another, whether by finding a shoebox, buying toys, or wrapping the gifts. Our teammembers look forward to this time of year, as we all gather together and take some time out of our day to help those in need. The shoeboxes are filled with toys, school supplies, or hygiene items, which then get distributed to a local church drop box by one of our teammembers.

Olesea was born in a small village in Moldova. Her parents worked long hours to put food on the table for her and her six siblings, but that is all they could afford. The only toy they had was a set of dry markers, which they would dip in water to make them last longer. One Christmas, Olesea and her siblings each received a shoebox. They were all filled with toys, but her box had a set of colorful markers. She was filled with joy when she saw the markers, as that was exactly what she was longing for — to be able to draw and color. Olesea said it was the happiest day of her life. Every year, our office focuses its attention toward dedicating time to benefit a charity. Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child is the international relief programwe take part in every year. This charity specializes in giving shoebox gifts to children in need in 160 countries around the world.

Along with our shoebox charity, here are some other holiday charities that your office can participate in this year:

Operation Christmas Child serves to give those children in need a reason to smile. Each gift is a symbol of hope and happiness to remind them that they are loved. Other charities around this time of year include Toys for Tots, Angel Tree, Better World Books, Pencils of Promise, Hope International, and many more. Giving is often in the minds of many people this time of year, and what better way to get into the holiday spirit than to participate in a charity? You can help people in need, bring smiles to the faces of children, and spread joy during the holidays. Plus, the atmosphere in your office will brighten too.

The beauty of this project lies in the time taken to gather gifts as a team and the process of purchasing and assembling them for the boys and

Each month, we’ll be highlighting one of our diverse specialties.

Our Diverse Specialties Property and Marine Hurricane Damage The fall is usually a busy time for insurance companies, and this year was no exception. For the second year in a row, major hurricanes made landfall in the United States. Although hurricane season has passed, insurance companies are likely still sorting through damage from this year’s hurricanes. Hurricane Florence made landfall in the Carolinas in September, inflicting substantial damage primarily via crippling rainfall and flooding. Hurricane Michael struck the Florida Panhandle in October and is recorded as the strongest storm to hit the United States in nearly 25 years. The disaster was a Category 4 —only a fewmph away from being a Category 5 hurricane — and left Florida and several other states in devastation. With a storm surge of 14 feet and winds that reached 155 mph, trees were snapped in half, roofs were torn from homes, boats were pushed into residential areas, and many buildings were swept away. Some of the attorneys and staff at our firmwere in South Florida for the last Category 5 storm to strike the United States, Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and most have weathered several named storms thereafter. We’ve seen firsthand the damage such storms cause to infrastructure and the resultant challenges insurance companies face when confronting voluminous losses in austere environments. Fortunately, from Andrew to Michael and all the tropical events in between, we as an insurance litigation firm and the insurance industry in general adapted to meet these challenges. For example, the use of advanced drone and satellite technology can permit access to damaged areas previously unreachable. Also, in litigated and nonlitigated claims, access to pictures and video on smartphones and social media can assist in resolving both first- and third-party issues. We often utilize information from such sources and other cutting-edge technologies to conclude claims. And finally, because we practice in diverse specialties, we are able to implement the ideas and strategies from other types of litigation toward successfully resolving property and marine hurricane damage claims.

UGLY SWEATER PARTIES

A Fun Trend You Can Easily Follow!

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN UGLY SWEATER PARTY? It’s rather simple — slip on your favorite Christmas sweater, gather all your friends and family members, make sure there are plenty of refreshments and games, and you’re guaranteed to have a top-tier party. A few ugly-sweater- themed games that should be on the agenda include an ugly gift exchange, which is similar to the white elephant exchange, except with the gaudiest gifts you can find; an ugly photo booth, complete with terrible, tacky props; and, of course, an ugly sweater contest. This is the only time of year when slipping into a lurid red sweater with a stuffed Santa sewn on the front is considered trendy. So adorn yourself in the frumpiest, tackiest sweater you can find, and have some fun this December!

It’s speculated that the first ugly sweater party took place in Vancouver, Canada, back in 2001. Since then, the trend has become one of the most popular holiday party themes. Come Thanksgiving, you’ll start to see racks in all types of clothing stores lined with hideous sweaters. If you’re ready to jump on the ugly-sweater-party bandwagon this Christmas season, here are a few things to keep in mind. YOUR VERY OWN UGLY SWEATER Ugly sweaters come in all shapes, sizes, and prices. You can head to H&M or a local thrift store to pick one up. However, if you have a sweater that’s been cozied up for years in the back of your closet or a drawer, now’s your chance to give it new life. Arm yourself with a hot glue gun, thread, and needle, and patch Santa, Rudolph, or Frosty on it. And let it be known that an ugly sweater isn’t complete without sparkles, beads, and sequins galore.
