Founded in 2023, Mamey centers Dominico-Haitian musical traditions as a foundation for new improvisational and compositional work. As founder, pianist, and composer, Julián Pujols Quall leads the group in reimagining styles such as Bamboulá, Sarandunga de Baní, Salve, Gagá, Kompa, and Dembow, expanding their rhythmic and melodic frameworks through a contemporary jazz lens.
Mamey has performed internationally and received a 2024 South Arts Foundation Grant to present concerts and workshops in underserved Latine community centers along the East Coast. After a Caribbean tour in 2025, Mamey´s debut album is scheduled for release in late Spring 2026 , and features collaborations from musicians and youth vocalists from Chicago, Baltimore, New York, and the Dominican Republic.
