Founded in 2023, Mamey centers Dominico-Haitian musical traditions as a foundation for new improvisational and compositional work. As founder, pianist, and composer, Julián Pujols Quall leads the group in reimagining styles such as Bamboulá, Sarandunga de Baní, Salve, Gagá, Kompa, and Dembow, expanding their rhythmic and melodic frameworks through a contemporary jazz lens.
Mamey has performed internationally and received a 2024 South Arts Foundation Grant to present concerts and workshops in underserved Latine community centers along the East Coast. After a Caribbean tour in 2025, Mamey´s debut album is scheduled for release in late Spring 2026 , and features collaborations from musicians and youth vocalists from Chicago, Baltimore, New York, and the Dominican Republic. MORE ABOUT MAMEY
A Dominican-American pianist, improviser, composer, and curator from Chicago whose work bridges classical training with contemporary jazz and intercultural collaboration and experimentation
After performing classical and jazz repertoire across the United States, the Dominican Republic, Spain, Belgium, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, I found a long-term artistic home in improvisation and cross-cultural collaboration. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and First Prize Winner of the DePaul University National Concerto Competition for Young Performers, my creative practice has evolved since my early work with the Peabody Improvisers Collective, where I helped develop experimental collaborative programs that shaped my understanding of jazz as a space for dialogue, inquiry, and transformation. MORE ABOUT JULIÁN
“An accomplished Dominican-American pianist based in [Chicago], he belongs to a generation of Dominicans in the diaspora who extend the nation’s musical traditions beyond its geographic boundaries with originality and disciplined artistry , while remaining deeply rooted in those traditions. His work draws directly from indigenous rhythms and musical practices, engaging both the country of origin and its global extensions as active sites of creative exchange. Despite his relative youth, he has developed a remarkably mature theoretical and practical artistic ethos . Across interpretive, compositional, and experimental contexts, his musical practice functions as a means of understanding both his surrounding environment and his own inner life.”
