CHART Digital Badges are HERE! We have created digital badges for Members, Lifetime Members, Partners, Award Recipients, and more! The purpose of these badges is to help you promote your CHART connections and achievements, primarily through social media, though some of our members and award recipients choose to add them to their email signature or employee profile on their company website. You are welcome to use the web badges in these (or other) ways if you like, but we have specifically designed them for the LinkedIn "Featured" Item area.

Everything’s Possible for Your Development in 2024 Leverage CHART to access a rainbow of opportunities for your personal and professional development next year. Attend a conference (or better yet, BOTH conferences). If you have already taken a specific competency (or are an expert in the topic), consider co-facilitating a competency workshop in Charlotte. Interested? Email CHART’s Education Strategist Curt Archambault at curt@ppstrat.com .

Feel free to download the appropriate badge(s) to represent your CHART membership and accomplishments! Visit chart.org > About CHART > Logos & Badges

Meet You in Red Lacquer

The Palmer House is an iconic landmark on Chicago’s bustling State Street. We’re excited to take in all of its history and opulence during our 106th Hospitality Training Conference, to be held in Chicago, August 11-14, 2024. On November 8, 1873, the new Palmer House welcomed its first guests, marking the opening of what would become one of the nation’s longest continually operating hotels. To the delight of guests, it was luxuriously decorated with garnet-draped chandeliers, Louis Comfort Tiffany masterpieces, and a ceiling fresco masterpiece by French painter Louis Pierre Rigal. Now, you’ll get to experience all of this yourself!

How cool is it that “Red Lacquer” is the name of our General Session ballroom? Due to the overwhelming positive feedback about the revised conference format we rolled out at the winter conference, we will be adopting this schedule for the Chicago conference. Plan now to join us in this memorable location!

PresidenTalks Hitting the Ground Running: Benchmarking for 2024

As we begin to look at closing out the 2023 year, you’re most likely in conversations on what 2024 will look like. This may take the form of setting goals based on your organization’s targets or (hopefully) being asked what your priorities will be in 2024. Another way to state this question is to answer it in terms of “how will I add value” to the organization. Naturally, when answering this question it’s probably easier to think of activities. But the challenge is to think of the activities in terms of outcomes. This could include things like reducing turnover or

training costs, speeding up the time it takes getting someone proficient, increasing sales, and so on. Once you share the outcomes you would like to impact, you can share how the activities lead to the outcomes and deliver an ROI. Now, there is a secret that many of the long-term CHART members know. One of the best resources for putting together goals, training programs, and benchmarking are the other members of CHART. As you are building the business case for initiatives you’ll pursue in 2024, wouldn’t it be easier to share benchmarks of what others are doing? We all know the adage that there is no need to reinvent the wheel. This is a great time of year to pick up the phone, send an email, or use Ask My Peers to learn and perhaps refine your own plans, or gain supporting anecdotal data that you can use to ultimately answer the 2024 priorities question. One of the great things about CHART membership is the diverse network it provides. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been approached by leaders within my organization that have asked me to see what others are doing on various fronts. And, the members (and friends) of CHART are that lifeline. Best Wishes as you hit the ground running with your 2024 planning!

10 Must-haves to Cultivate a Positive Workplace Culture Why Employees Leave the Hospitality Industry: Closing the Back Door for Better Retention

High 5 Time is NOW! After 10 years of the Training High 5 being a part of the summer conference, we’re moving it to the winter conference to give these practical gems even more play. The winners will submit a brief video presentation of their ideas to open up the recognition for those who aren’t able to join us in-person at the conference. Do you have a brilliant idea, simple solution, or blinding flash of the obvious you want to share? It doesn’t matter if it’s a fun training game, a complex rollout strategy, or even just clever new signage, as long as it is a practical idea that other hospitality trainers would like to hear about, we would love to include it. Submit your idea by January 15 , and if selected, it will be featured at the Charlotte conference in March.

How did you get into the hospitality industry? I was initially drawn to the hospitality industry for the flexible hours and scheduling. I was a college student and young mother that still needed to work, and the restaurant industry was flexible for me to do both. I fell in love with the hospitality industry because the service values and high expectations of leadership aligned with my servant attitude and values at home. I stayed with my first restaurant job for 25 years. I started off serving a five-table section to leading a region of seven locations in Southern and Northern California. What has been the most unexpected moment of your training career so far? There were so many unexpected moments in the industry, but the ones I remember the most were by my employees and managers. The advice I was asked for, or the transparency that a team member would share with me, always kept me on my toes. Any time a team member would say, “Can I talk to you?” I frequently found myself bracing with composure and a strong listening ear because I just never knew what they would say. I used to tell my children when they were in high school,” You can tell me anything, and I guarantee it will not surprise me,” and I was right! What is your “Golden Rule” of training? To keep the perspective of the learner, the teacher, and the guests when introducing training tools. I try to understand the view of each to ensure the training material speaks to each. Most recently, my golden rule of training is the development of all team members and for all levels of learning.
