A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Welcome to November! I hope this month finds you in good health and high spirits. I look forward to this time of year as I move past the smell of pumpkin spice and head into baking cookies, sitting by the fireplace, prepping for family gatherings and usually, enjoying the first real snow of the season. This month, TPT is celebrating Native American Heritage Month. TPT is committed to honoring and preserving the diverse stories and traditions of our region, and we are excited to showcase the incredible contributions of Native American communities throughout this special month. Brand-new national programming and engaging local content are highlighted throughout the magazine in celebration of the month. Discover more Native American History content at tpt.org/NAHM . Bring Her Home Continues to Inspire Awareness and Hope
At TPT we believe in the power of storytelling.
“I am thrilled about the film’s reception with national and international audiences,” states Hale. “The Missing and Murdered Indigenous movement is global because the problem is global. Watching the film resonate with audiences outside Minnesota shows that the film is driving public awareness toward the challenges Indigenous communities face and inspiring hope by lifting the powerful and creative voices of Indigenous communities.”
Bring Her Home , the award-winning TPT documentary directed and produced by Leya Hale (Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota, Diné) showcases local stories that have resonated with a global audience. The story of three Indigenous women fighting to vindicate and honor their missing and murdered relatives has inspired audiences across the world. Bring Her Home was co-produced with Vision Maker Media, an Indigenous led organization dedicated to empowering and engaging Native people to share stories. The film originally premiered on PBS stations nationwide in March of 2022. Since its release, Bring Her Home has earned awards, was an official selection at 34 national and international film festivals, and been contracted for international distribution with Espresso Media.
You can stream Bring Her Home at tpt.org/bring-her- home and on the PBS App.
Hale’s next film, The Electric Indian , shares the story of Minnesota hockey legend Henry Boucha. The film, also a partnership with Vision Maker Media, details Boucha's athletic success until his NHL career was cut short by an on-ice assault and injury, his legal battles with the NHL, and his journey of healing and cultural reclamation. The documentary will premiere in 2024.
Recognition for Bring Her Home : • Best of the Fest, Ely Film Festival • Best Native American Film, Mesa International Film Festival • Best Documentary Feature, Red Nation International Film Festival • Human Rights Winner, Quetzalcoatl Indigenous International Film Festival • Upper Midwest Regional Emmy, Documentary- Topical • Dog Iron Award, Will Rogers Motion Picture Festival • Best Feature Film, NatiVision Film Festival

What Is Happiness, Anyway? By Jackson Rainer
Gwen is a bright 60-something year old woman working as a nurse educator in a southern urban hospital. In a psychotherapy session exploring concerns regarding experiences with chronic, debilitating anxiety, she said, "I know I should be happy, but I don't even know what that is." She continued, "The pandemic made things worse for me. I think my natural state of being is not necessarily happy, so I'm not sure what to expect." Gwen, like many, is experiencing how happiness, defined by an internal sense of personal satisfaction, seems to have dramatically changed in the last few years. Cynicism, irritability and exhaustion rise with increasingly demanding urgencies of daily living embodying different energy than was experienced in the pre-pandemic years.
2. Close personal and intimate relationships. Finding and sustaining loving, companionable communities enhances the sense of warmth that is a marker of the energy of happiness. 3. Focused intent on the beauty and art in nature. Place cut flowers on the dining room table. Listen closely to the sound of the rain. Hug a tree. 4. Reasonable standards of living and satisfactory work. By Jung’s definition, the more grace and simplicity is found in the course of the day, the more happiness is present. 5. A philosophic or religious point of view. An organized belief system that allows meaning for coping successfully with the alterations of daily life is a defining factor of happiness.
"I know I should be happy, but I don't even know what that is."
Neurological psychologists remind us that while our brains are good at many things, happiness is not necessarily one of them. The process of natural selection and sustenance is more oriented to survival, reproduction and full utilization of resources. So, in 2023 as the world is more fragmented, polarized and we live with a loss of the common good, the psychological "lay of the land" for what makes us happy appears to be changed.
5 Elements of Happiness

1. Good physical health. For 55+ers, good physical health is defined by staying in motion. While it may be aspirational to run a 5k race, walking 20 minutes every day is good enough exercise.

When Friends Are Family By Randi Mazzella
Over the summer, my husband and I had a small party in honor of our oldest daughter's engagement. The celebration was at her Aunt Andrea and Uncle Spencer's house. Over the years, we have celebrated so many occasions, from holidays to birthdays, in their home, so this was a perfect spot to celebrate this happy event. Although my kids have always referred to Andrea and Spencer as their aunt and uncle, we are not related but we do share a special connection. It's friendship, but it is more than that. Blood-related or not, to us, in our hearts, we are the definition of family. Psychiatrist Gail Saltz, host of the “How Can I Help?” podcast, says, "Family is valuable. These relationships are long-standing and intimate. Positive family relationships can have both mental and physical health benefits." But while family can be wonderful, it can also be complicated. Not all families have positive, healthy relationships among their members.
Yvonne Ransel, 74, says, "I have so many close friends. Some I have known for over forty years, others I have met more recently, but the bonds are also very strong." Ransel has two siblings, but in many ways, she doesn't feel as connected to them as she does to her friends. Ransel explains, "I don't have as much in common with my siblings. I am the oldest of three. When I left home for college in another state, my younger sister was only 14 years old. We love each other but don't really know each other as adults."
"I don't have as much in common with my siblings."
This disconnect was evident when Ransel's husband died in 2021. She says, "My friends and neighbors were at my house immediately, bringing food and taking care of me. My brother and sister came a few days later. They had good intentions but just weren't sure what to do. They didn't help me in the same way that my friends did." Ransel plans to spend Christmas with her adult children, but for Thanksgiving, she will spend the day with close friends in her community. She says, "I plan to celebrate the holiday with friends in town who are like family. I am thankful that I have such wonderful friends."
