Get Loud for Your Library! by Amelia Bainbridge, Communications & Donor Relations Coordinator, St. Thomas Public Library October 18 to 24 is Ontario Public Library Week, and this year’s theme is Loud for Libraries. It’s a chance to celebrate everything public libraries bring to their communities and talk about why libraries matter. So, how can you get loud for your library? It can be as simple as using it! Get a library card: Your library card gives you access to a whole world of books, movies, magazines, digital books and other resources and more. If you don’t have one yet, October is a great time to come in and get one! Library cards are free, and all you need to get one is a piece of ID with your current address. Use your library card : Borrow a new book, download an audiobook, check out a Wi-Fi hotspot, or grab some magazines for the weekend. Every time you use your library, you help show that these resources matter to your community. Use library resources: The library offers much more than things you can borrow. Come to a free program, use the public computers, get help with technology, or take a free online course from the comfort of home. You can print a document, create projects for your hobby or small business in the Maker Lab, or use a study room to work or meet with others. Tell someone about it: One of the easiest ways to support your library is to talk about it. Learned something new? Read a great book? Discovered a service you didn’t know about? Tell a friend, family member or neighbour. Share a St. Thomas Public Library social media post or invite someone to a program with you. You never know who might discover their new favourite library service!

Take the next step: If you want to have a more direct role in your library’s future, consider applying to serve on the St. Thomas PublicLibrary Board. Board members help guide the library and make decisions that support the needs of our community. You don’t need to be a library expert. What matters is that you care about St. Thomas and want to help make our library the best it can be. For more information about applying to be on the Library Board, visit stthomaspubliclibrary.ca/library-board. Get Loud for Libraries Day: Join us at St. Thomas Public Library on Tuesday, October 20, for a special morning to kick off Ontario Public Library Week. Bring your little ones to a storytime with Mayor Joe at 10:30 am., then join us for a flag raising at City Hall at 11 am., followed by a special reception back at the library at 11:30 am. Hope to see you there!
