Take a Look Inside Diagnostic Imaging at STEGH! by Peri Hayes With contagious enthusiasm, Shelley Stirling passionately intro- duces her background in health care. Once an x-ray student at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH), Shelley was thereafter hired as an X-ray Technologist in ‘94. Proudly living and breathing STEGH for years, Shelley has been the Manager of the Diagnostic Imaging Department for two years and counting: “Overall, this was a seamless transition into my current role -- I love my team!” “Diagnostic imaging services include a wide range of modalities that look at the human body in various ways,” Shelley details. The following are examples of what Diagnostic Imaging entails: CT, echocardiography, mammogram, MRI, ultrasound, x-ray, and more. “We get to peek inside the human body all day long; this helps with diagnosis and treatment planning.” Furthermore, Shelley reveals that STEGH supported nearly 11,500 patients during the month of July for an array of the aforementioned modalities. About 50 % of their appointments are outpatient bookings, while the other 50% are inpatient and through emergency services. The volume of patients has been steadily increasing over the years and in response, STEGH has expanded quality of care and services; take joint injections, for example. “In my role,” Shelley thoughtfully reflects, “What excites me is supporting my team. The demands of imaging are great, and the team navigates this with such professionalism and camaraderie. This department is special because the team is exceptional. Diagnostic Imaging is comprised of approximately 65 team members including clerical; they are an integral part of the process through booking appointments and being the first
friendly face that patients see. Care is their number one priority and patient interaction is vital -- we appreciate that this can
