Renovating with Four-Legged Family Members in Mind Home renovations are often planned around the people who live in a house, but with a little creativity, they can also make life more comfortable for its four-legged residents. One of the most practical places to begin is with flooring. Luxury vinyl, tile and other scratch-resistant surfaces can withstand claws, muddy paws and the occasional spilled water bowl. Area rugs can add warmth while being easier and less expensive to clean or replace than wall-to-wall carpeting. A mudroom or entryway can also become a pet-friendly command centre. Consider adding low hooks for leashes, built-in drawers for toys and supplies, and a cabinet for storing food out of sight. A bench with cubbies underneath can provide space for baskets, towels and outdoor gear. If room and plumbing allow, a tiled washing station with a handheld sprayer can make cleaning muddy dogs much easier—and save the family bathtub from taking a beating. Built-in feeding stations are another attractive option. Food and water bowls can be incorporated into the end of a kitchen island or installed in a pullout drawer that disappears when not in use. A nearby drawer can hold food, treats and medications. For enthusiastic eaters, placing the bowls on a waterproof or easy-to-clean surface will help contain splashes and crumbs. Unused spaces can also be reimagined. The area beneath a staircase may become a cozy sleeping nook, complete with a pet bed, lighting and decorative trim. A low window seat can give a cat the perfect neighbourhood lookout, while wall-mounted shelves can create an indoor climbing route without taking up floor space. Even a cabinet can be modified YOU ASKED, WE ANSWERED We install
to conceal a litter box, provided it has proper ventilation and remains easily accessible for cleaning. Renovations can improve safety as well. Built-in gates can blend into cabinetry or slide into a wall when they are not needed. Screens, secure fencing and enclosed “catios” allow pets to enjoy fresh air safely. When designing stairs, consider good lighting and non-slip treads, particularly for older animals. For pets that prefer being close to the action, a small nook beside a home office desk or kitchen island gives them a comfortable place to relax without being underfoot. Sound-absorbing materials may also help create a quieter retreat during storms, fireworks or busy family gatherings. The best pet-friendly renovations do not need to look like pet renovations. With thoughtful planning, bowls, beds, toys and supplies can be incorporated seamlessly into a home’s design. The result is a cleaner, more organized space that works better for every member of the household—whether they have two legs or four.
