Softer Water, A Happier Home Hard water may not pose a health risk, but it can quietly take a toll on your home, appliances and daily comfort. For homeowners in St. Thomas and the surrounding area, installing a water softener can offer benefits that extend from the bathroom shower to the monthly household budget. “Hard water is water with high levels of dissolved minerals, which it picks up as it flows through soil and rock,” explains Chris Patriquin, co-owner and president of Simply Pure Water. Chris has helped people find solutions to their water problems for more than 26 years. The primary minerals responsible for hard water are calcium and magnesium. According to Chris, both municipally supplied water and private well water in this region often fall within the hard to very hard range. Common warning signs include chalky deposits around faucets and shower heads, soap scum, spotted glassware and soap or shampoo that does not lather properly. Clothes may feel stiff after washing, while skin can feel dry or irritated and hair may appear dull. The impact goes beyond appearance and comfort. Over time, hard water creates limescale inside pipes and fixtures. This buildup can restrict water flow, reduce pressure, clog shower heads and aerators and place added stress on valves, washers and seals. Appliances are also vulnerable, particularly those that heat water. Scale can accumulate on the heating elements and interior surfaces of water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers, forcing them to work harder. “This raises energy costs and shortens the lifespan of the appliances,” says Chris. “Washers and dishwashers can also water softeners

Simply put, calcium and magnesium are captured by resin inside the unit and exchanged for sodium or potassium ions. The system automatically regenerates as required, based on household water use and the hardness level. For homeowners, the result can mean fewer mineral deposits, easier cleaning, better-performing appliances and reduced use of soaps and detergents. For those living in the home, soft water can provide better lather, softer laundry and less mineral residue on skin and hair. Maintenance is relatively simple, involving regular salt replenish- ment, occasional hardness testing and professional servicing approximately every 12 to 18 months. A properly maintained system will typically last 10 to 15 years, while higher-quality units may serve a household for 20 years or longer.
