Horton Market: Return of Pumpkin Fest! by Peri Hayes Monique Clark, Horton Farmers’ Market Coordinator with St. Thomas Economic Development, delightedly discusses the return of Pumpkin Fest following their 2025 debut: “The idea is to facilitate a fall-themed event in St. Thomas for spreading excitement in October, and encouraging families to enjoy time in the community during such a beautiful month.” “A feature we are continuing from last year is our contests, including pumpkin carving and painting. For which, anybody from the community can bring their decorated pumpkin.” There will be ballotted judging, as market attendees are invited to select their favourite festive creation. There will be a photo contest this year through online submission, with details available on the Horton Market’s social media. Moreover, baking contest submissions have previously entailed a variety of delectable banana and zucchini breads, apple pie, pumpkin pie, and beyond. As well, costume contests will be offered in adult, children and family categories. As Monique reveals, prizes for the victors are valuable Horton dollars. This event will be true to every other Horton Market, but with a pinch of pumpkin spice flair. Games of Pin the Spider on the Web, Pumpkin Bowling, Witches’ Hat Ring Toss, and more will be brought to life in collaboration with community partners and market organizers. “Not only can fall lovers visit the incredible vendors and stock up on an array of goods, the available
activities are geared toward encouraging participation at the market,” Monique enthuses. Celebrated on October 24th from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monique announces that their Pumpkin Fest Spooky Storytime is scheduled at 11:00 am. “We will also have a local pumpkin vendor this year, offering tons of shapes and sizes.” With over 60 vendors on board, the vendor space for Pumpkin Fest is now full. “Anybody can attend,” Monique cheers, “and your regular products of meats, cheeses and veggies will remain available.” Thriving in her role as the Horton Market Assistant, the lovely Gen Kroeker will be operating demonstrations in their market kitchen -- featuring recipes and tastings made available using market products. Monique gleefully expresses, “Gen has been a great addition to the team, and many people are excited to have her here.” “We want people to know that the Horton Market remains open year-long. We operate every Saturday with exception to the first weekend in May and November. Followed by this, we celebrate our Christmas Market and the week after that is the November 21st Winter Horton Market from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm.” Join the community this October 24th at 10 Manitoba Street for a morning of fall fun! As Monique concludes, “We hope Pumpkin Fest will help people get in the seasonal spirit.” Email hortonfarmersmarket@stthomas.ca with inquiries, or phone the Market at 519-868-5551.
