Practices operate at the Joe Thornton Community Centre and the Community Complex in Aylmer, along with local games facilitated at the latter location. “We accept registrations throughout the season, which is not exclusive to para athletes -- all genders, abilities and ages from across Elgin County are welcome.” “The sleds are custom and if you require support, we can make it happen -- whatever works for you, we are here for you. Some players propel themselves across the ice, while others utilize a pusher. We supply sleds and sticks, while players provide their remaining equipment.” Elgin Imperial Sledge Hockey Club looks forward to their debut in the St. Thomas Optimist Santa Claus Parade next month as Vickie concludes, “We’re grateful for the community involvement, and welcome more to join. We’re here, we’re going to stay, and we’re better than ever.” since. The inclusion that my daughter has experienced being the only girl on the team the last few years is incredible. There is such team camaraderie -- it’s like a family.” With versatile experience as Vice President, trainer and unofficial team photographer, Vickie cheers, “Above all, I’m a hockey mom!” The season begins this month — along with their Cruiser’s Cup tournament in Mississauga during Halloween weekend — and championships taking place in April. The league also offers try-out days, for which members of the public are invited to experience Elgin Imperial Sledge Hockey Club first-hand. This opportunity has resulted in many memories, and even new commitment for the season ahead. “The league is governed under the Ontario Sledge Hockey Association, and we have various levels of teams within our organization. We play across Ontario, travelling from Sarnia to Peterborough, Woolwich to Toronto.” Vickie expresses what personally excites her: “Chatting in the community and discovering the amount of people that don’t know this exists as an accessible option. We have players on our team starting at five years of age, while the eldest gentleman I know is 72 this year and still enjoying the game of hockey.” “One player named Breydon played on team Southern Ontario; another player, Travis, has attended two Team Canada camps. Meanwhile, other participants might celebrate playing for fun.” Furthermore, Vickie speaks to their focus on empowerment: “Rather than seeing limitations, look beyond and discover new strengths. It’s amazing watching the players grow. This has opened my eyes to what is in our community, as we strive to grow this sport across Canada.”
