bringeth forth much fruit; fo r without me y e can do nothing” (John 15:5). The branches are utterly dependent on the root: but so is the root dependent on the branches. W hat is the end of a vine? It is not to spread branches, but to bear fruit. What part of the vine bears the clusters? Certainly not the root, but the branches! So it is in that part of Christ which is you and I that the fruit is to be brought forth. The Lord will supply the life, the nourish ment, the energy, but in us the fruit is to be displayed. The glory of a vine is its fruit. It is a wonderful and solemn thought that the Lord is depending on us for the display for His glory.—J. M acaulay . "H e that dw elleth in the secret place o f the M ost H igh shall abide under the shadow o f the Alm ighty” (Psa. 9 1 :1 ). There are ferns in the garden of the soul as well as flowers. The flowers grow best in the sunshine; the ferns grow best in the shade. There is the fern of patience, and the fern of longsuffering, and the fern of meekness. And the great Gardener of the soul delights in the ferns, and purposes to save them from destruction by the garrish day. Therefore He takes us into the shade — the shade of disappointment, or the shade of sorrow, or the shade of sickness and pain. But it is a very blessed shadow, for it is the “shadow of the Almighty.” Here the ferns flourish and the cloudy day makes the garden beautiful.—J. H. J owett . NOVEM BER 14 His Wonderful Name “H is name shall b e called W onderful” (Isa; 9 :6 ). In everyday life it may be true that the name of a person matters little, but the names of Scripture matter a great deal. They are full of significance. . . O f all the names in the Bible none is more interesting than that of the Lord Jesus Christ. Before His birth His name was given: "His name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb” (Lk. 2 :2 1 ). Prophetic of His life and mission was the name that was thus be stowed upon Him, for above all else His name was to be Jesus, or Saviour, because "he shall save his people from their sins.” —E van gelical Christian. NOVEM BER 15 Having All in Him "In him dw elleth all the fulness o f the G odhead bodily” (Col. 2 :1 0 ). W e thank Thee for life, that mysterious gift. How strange, how elusive, how sweet! For being created and quickened by Thee W ith powers so wondrous replete. W e thank Thee for love, that most won derful gift, For friendships and fellowships dear; For all the enjoyment and pleasures they yield, For home with its gladness and cheer. W e thank Thee for Him—Thy "unspeak able gift,” NOVEM BER 13 Shadows of the Almighty

“Our light affliction . . . w orketh for us a far m ore exceeding and eternal weight o f glory” (2 Cor. 4 :1 7 ). An old Puritan writer says; “A stick in the water looks crooked, but take it out of the water and it is quite straight. So will it be when we look at God’s dealings with us.” When we see all, we will say of our bitterest sorrows that it would have been unkind in our God not to have allowed them. But it will be to our praise and glory, too. Angels will serve us all the more willingly, because we never permit ted a doubt or surmise of God’s love to enter our minds. W e are to be rewarded, not only for work done, but for burdens borne; and I am not sure but that the bright est rewards will be for those who have borne burdens without murmuring. —A ndrew B onar . NOVEM BER 17 Ever Living "H e ever liveth to m ake intercession" (Heb. 7:25). The living Christ is the reigning Christ. " ‘He ever liveth,’ ” writes Dr. Griffith Thomas, “the supreme inspiration of the in dividual Christian and of the whole church. All through the New Testament, from the time of the ascension onward, the one as surance is that Christ is living: and in His life we live, hold fellowship with God, receive grace for daily living, and rejoice in victory over sin, sorrow and death.” ¡ •.—L ife o f Faith. NOVEM BER 18 Our Great High Priest "In whom are hid all the treasures o f wis dom and know ledge" (Col. 2 :3 ). Christ is everlasting because He is the eternal Son of God. The Aaronic priest hood was continued by a constant suc cession of priests, and those who claim to be the successors of the apostles say that it Is continued now in the same way. Christ’s name is not continued by any earthly suc cession, but by the risen, reigning Christ at the right hand of God. W e do not look to any earthly succession for our authority; we look to the throne of God, where Christ is seated a priest forever after the order of Melchisedec. He will be seated there until His enemies become His footstool. —W illiam H. W righton . NOVEM BER 19 What to Do with Sins and Cares "Casting all your care upon him" (1 Pet. 5 :7 ). Jesus Christ is able to deal with our cares. But it is important for us to notice how He deals with them. He deals with our sins—by taking them upon Himself. He bids us cast all our care upon Him. That is the open secret of peace, the open secret of complete and continuous victory. When we cast all our sins upon Christ, there is
