Denis Vaillancourt. «We have been work- ing with the other United Way chapters in the region for quite some time to help our respective communities. The next step is to seal our collaboration.» The funds raised by each United Way will serve, as always, to help people within each of the communities. Employees and volunteers will still have control over mon- eys that assist vulnerable people in their communities. «This collaboration is an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences to address the problems we all face in our communi- ties,» said Jodie Densmore, executive di- rector of United Way. «We are excited and excited to start the work.» The four United Way Centers will benefit from each other›s knowledge and expertise. Once the merger has been accepted by their members, they will also be able to share resources, such as information technology, fundraising tools, marketing materials, com- munity development research and more.

United Way Prescott-Russell announced, on November 17, that its board of directors had agreed, in principle, to a new collabo- ration and amalgamation with the United Way of Ottawa and the counties of Lanark and Renfrew. After the merger, all funds raised within a community will continue to be invested within that community, in support of the most vulnerable within Prescott-Russell. On December 5, the four United Way chapters will hold special meetings in their respec- tive communities. Members will be invited to support the new structure. The Prescott- Russell meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Scouts premises at 550 Albert Street in Plantagenet. «Our board of directors strongly supports this work as we continue to ensure a lo- cal presence and focus on Prescott-Russell residents,» said United Way board member

Centraide Prescott-Russell a annoncé, le 17 novembre, que les membres de son conseil d’administration avaient accepté, en principe, une nouvelle collaboration et une fusion avec les Centraide d’Ottawa et des comtés de Lanark et de Renfrew.

Good study results Trustees and staff for the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) have reason to be pleased. The younger generations of Upper Canada district students are doing well according to the latest Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) test results. UCDSB Superintendent Valerie Allen reported, during the Oct. 26 board meeting, that the combined overall EQAO results for Grades 3 and 6 classes in the district have increased by 17 per cent since the 2002-2003 school year. Primary reading scores have increased four per cent since the 2011-2012 term, both the junior reading and writing scores have increased seven per cent and six per cent since that same period. The EQAO results are matched against a combined provincial average for all of Ontario’s schools.

New goals for UCDSB The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is setting new goals for its math and reading programs for students at all levels, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. By the end of next year, the UCDSB plans for a three per cent boost of primary and junior reading and writing levels, compared to the provincial standard. A five-per cent improvement in literacy skills for first-time eligible students is also at goal for 2017. In mathematics, the UCDSB goals are 90 per cent of classroom participation in number talks and improved critical thinking, and analysis skills and comprehension sufficient to achieve at least a 10 per cent improvement in the overall grade achievement, compared to the provincial standard. – Gregg Chamberlain
