auxiliaires du WDMH, Elinor Jordan et Louise Arsenault, d’un chèque de 233 141 $ à l’hôpital, qui servira à acheter neuf articles d’équipement de soins aux patients pour divers services du WDMH. « Nous sommes très fiers », a déclaré Bev Beck, membre des auxiliaires qui a présidé le comité organisateur de l’événement. « Cette célébration du 75e anniversaire est l’aboutissement d’un travail acharné de la part de personnes dévouées et passion- nées qui donnent leur temps, leur énergie, leurs ressources et leurs compétences », a déclaré Joan Farlinger, membre des auxi- liaires, présidente sortante et bénévole au WDMH depuis 35 ans. La force auxiliaire a vu le jour il y a 75 ans, le 3 août 1948, lorsqu’un petit groupe de femmes s’est réuni à l’hôtel de ville pour discuter de l’impact que l’hôpital aurait sur l’ensemble de la communauté et de la nécessité d’une force auxiliaire pour l’aider. Près d’un siècle plus tard, les auxiliaires du WDMH ont organisé des bazars, des col- lectes de fonds, des tournois, des ventes de pâtisseries et bien d’autres choses encore, afin de récolter des millions de dollars pour le WDMH. « Merci à nos incroyables bénévoles », a déclaré Cholly Boland, PDG. « Ils constituent une partie essentielle de notre équipe de soins depuis plus de sept décennies et nous sommes très reconnaissants de leur soutien continu ».

The Desjardins GoodSpark fund is an initative set up in 2016 that pledged to invest $250 million in community projects by 2024. It supports the socio-economic recovery of regions by investing in the envi- ronment, youth, health, entrepreneurship, and recreational tourism development.

Clarence-Rockland veteran Bob Beaudry will be one of 31 veterans competing in the Invictus Games on Team Canada. The Invictus Games began when HRH The Duke of Sussex visited the Warrior Games in the USA in 2013. He saw first-hand how the power of sport can help those suffering from injuries and illness. The Games har- ness the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation, and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country. This year’s Games will take place in Düsseldorf, Germany, and a local veteran from Clarence-Rockland has been chosen to participate as part of Team Canada. Bob Beaudry, who will represent the Pres- cott-Russell region as part of Team Canada, served for 20 years with the Canadian Armed Forces, stationed in Petawawa, Halifax, Edmonton, and Ottawa. He’s also deployed on several overseas operations between the Balkans, NATO, and the Middle East. He’ll be joining the other 30 members of Team Canada and participating in the Archery, Swimming, and Wheelchair Rugby events. “I am honored to have been chosen to participate in the 2023 Invictus Games and being a part of Team Canada is definitely an exciting feeling,” Beaudry said. “There are a lot of logistics involved and that part worries me a little, but I am not worried about com- peting at all.” Aside from one-week training

camps organized by Team Canada, Beaudry has been practicing with a Wheelchair Rugby Team, taking lessons from an Archery Club, and swimming at the local YMCA. He’s been exercising five times per week to prepare for the games, along with adhering to a strict diet. The team doesn’t have the exact schedule for the games yet, but Beaudry is excited to go back to Germany. “I have only been to Germany as a staging
location for other deployments but never to visit,” he said. “During the games, I will not have much time to do anything else however, once the games are over, I plan on spending some extra time to travel around Germany with some of my family.” The Invictus Games will take place in Düsseldorf, Germany from September 9 to 16. UCDSB TAKES FRENCH DELF EXAMS
across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) participated in the Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF) exams to prove their French language skills. The DELF is an internationally recognized certification based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages that is awarded by the French Ministry of National Education in France. It assesses listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in students. All students enrolled in the Grade 12 French Immersion course at Russell High School and Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) were given the opportunity to take the exam. The tests were conducted by certified DELF instructors, and the results were sent to DELF Ontario and France for review. Upon successful completion of the exam, the students will receive a for-life DELF certificate awarded by the French Ministry of National Education. “One of the provincial goals for French as a Second Language is to increase student confidence, proficiency, and achievement in French,” said Vice-Principal of Teaching and Learning and DELF Program Co-lead Cindy St.Pierre Steele. “This goal reminds us how important it is that students have confidence in their ability to use their French skills effec- tively. I’m excited to see this program gain traction and expand to more students taking the French Core and Immersion programs in UCDSB schools in the coming years.”

and their culture reflected in the activities and lessons. Research shows that when students feel safe, accepted and their identities are represented at school, they have better outcomes. And that’s what we want — students who are thriving at school and beyond our walls.” The response rate for the two surveys was good overall; 30 percent of elemen- tary students and 56 percent of secondary students responded to the ‘We All Belong’ survey, and 61 percent of Grade 7 and 8 students responded to the ‘Intermediate Student Voice’ survey. The UCDSB has yet to process all the data, but some preliminary findings indi- cate that 59 percent of students want to learn more about Real-World Learning, 48 percent of students want to learn more about academic skill preparedness, 44 percent are comfortable discussing problems with teachers or guidance counsellors, and 14 percent identify as having a disability. The results of the two student surveys will inform the board’s next steps. From November 2022 to January 2023, the Upper Canada District School Board col- lected data from elementary and secondary school students through its ‘We All Belong’ student survey and ‘Intermediate Student Voice’ survey. The UCDSB will be using the information gathered on school experiences, cultural identity, gender identity, race, spoken languages, and socio-economic status to set specific and intentional next steps for increasing student support in schools. “Gathering this data is essential to get- ting a better understanding of our student population. When we have this information, we can work towards creating programs and finding resources that better suit the needs and wants of our students,” said Superintendent Marsha McNair, who is responsible for the Equity, Inclusion and Diversity portfolio. “We want all our students to feel safe at school and see themselves

The final seedling went into the ground around 2 p.m. The weekend treeplanting at Alfred Station is the first of several treeplanting projects the PRRTA has plans for during this year and next year. Collard noted that one reason for the treeplanting work is to replace damaged or fallen trees along the trail as a result of last year’s extreme windstorm in May and the early April ice storm this year. «It’s important to show that we (PRRTA) are very serious about maintaining the trail,» said Collard. «We hope to have more treeplanting events in the future.» The PRRTA’s future plans for the trail include increasing the amount of natural shade along the route for the benefit of hikers and cyclists, and increasing the tree cover for the Prescott-Russell region. The group also plans to build a pavilion at the Alfred Station site similar to those already on site at trail locations near Vankleek Hill in Champlain Township and Plantagenet in Alfred-Plantagenet Township.
More than a dozen people spent their sunny Saturday planting trees along the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail. “We got lucky with the weather,”, said Eric Collard, executive director of the Pres- cott-Russell Recreational Trail Association (PRRTA). “It was nice to see people from all the different communities come out and help plant trees.” The recreational trail group, with partnership support from Boisés Est and EcoEast, organized a treeplanting party at the Alfred Station location along the PR Trail on May 6. Desjardins Group provided financial aid towards purchase of the trees and seedlings for planting and Boisés Est and EcoEast both provided expertise on the types of trees suitable for growing along the trail and the proper way to plant them. A group of 15 volunteers spent the early afternoon planting 150 seedlings and ready- to-plant tree saplings at the station site and

TRAVAUX : Les travaux de reconstruction comprendront le nivellement, le drainage, la base granulaire, le pavage à chaud et l’électricité. INCIDENCES SUR LA CIRCULATION : En ce qui concerne la circulation, on peut s’attendre à des retards en direction de l’est et de l’ouest pendant la période des travaux, du 15 mai 2023 au 1er décembre 2023. Dans le cadre des travaux de reconstruction, la circulation passera par une déviation à deux voies et dans les deux sens, où la circulation en direction de l’est et de l’ouest sera réduite à une seule voie de circulation, séparée par une barrière en béton.
