Premier Doug Ford’s “buck a beer” challenge marked its official start August 27, but just three Ontario’s breweries picked up the gauntlet and now it’s down to two after the Labour Day weekend. Loblaw’s President’s Choice, and two small independent brewers, Barley Days and Cool Beer Brewing offered their beers at a dollar in return for premium shelf space at the LCBO, and special promotion of their products in the LCBO official magazine. But Loblaw’s has now stepped away after running through most of its shelf inventory over the September long weekend. Also not all LCBO outlets stock the dollar- beer brands. Ontario’s craft brewers, including the four in Prescott-Russell and the major breweries, have passed on the challenge because they would lose money on every bottle or can produced. —photo LCBO
