2025 Environmental Report
Implementation Status & Variance While HVO is our operational standard, logistical constraints and event formats led to variance across the 2025 portfolio: HVO Powered: Most events, including the Great North Run, Great North 10K, and Great Manchester Run, utilised HVO. Diesel (Fossil): Due to local supply chain constraints, the Great Scottish Run and Great North Swim-Run relied on standard diesel generators.
The HVO Transition For most of our major events, we successfully transitioned from diesel to HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) in a bid to reduce the emissions from generator usage. The Carbon Logic: Under GHG Protocol standards, the CO2 released from HVO is classified as carbon neutral because the carbon was recently sequestered during the growth of the organic raw material. Consequently, the emissions factor only accounts for the residual non-CO2 greenhouse gases - Nitrous Oxide N2O and Methane CH4. The Impact: This shift resulted in a minimal operational footprint of just 0.11 tCO2e for our HVO- powered events, avoiding approximately 7.5 tCO2e if diesel was used. Innovation: Hybrid Battery Storage Beyond fuel choice, we are reducing total consumption through efficiency. Case Study (Great South Run) We deployed hybrid battery units alongside generators. This technology allowed us to switch off diesel generators for 6 hours during low-load periods, reducing total fuel volume by 30%.
None: The Beyond Events series and 13 Valleys required no mobile power generation.
