Printed Materials This category captures the high-volume consumable print items required for event administration, such as resident letters, accreditation, wristbands, and run numbers. The Durability Dilemma Unlike signage, reducing the impact of these items is complex due to strict performance requirements.
Run Numbers (Pertex) A significant portion of this footprint comes from run numbers. We currently utilise Tyvek—a tightly woven, high-performance nylon fabric—chosen for its lightweight strength, abrasion resistance, and effective water repellency, ensuring the timing chip remains secure throughout the race. Beyond durability, these numbers are critical as the primary means of identifying runners and accessing medical information in an emergency, while also serving as the official validation of participation. The Constraint Finding a sustainable alternative remains an industry-wide challenge. Biodegradable or recycled alternatives often lack the resilience to withstand sweat, rain, and friction, risking the loss of timing chips and data. Current Status As of 2025, this remains a “hard-to-abate” category. Until a material innovation occurs that balances biodegradability with the rugged performance needed for long-distance racing, we view this footprint as an essential operational cost.
