Moskau couple ready to help conquer cancer

this,” saidMarilyn, adding that she has per- sonal reasons for dedicating her time and effort to supporting the OneWalk project. “I’ve lost two sisters to cancer already,” she said. For Michael, it is also personal, very per- sonal, involving his best friend in the world. “Marilyn had cancer,” he said, adding that she was diagnosed early and treated. Now he’s dedicated tomaking sure she and others never have to face the fear again. Joining them as part of their TeamWalk for Life entry in OneWalk Montreal, is their daughter, Catherine, who will be part of the volunteer support there, as well as a niece and at least one other person. This year’s walk through the streets of Montreal won’t be as long as past ones were. The Moskau’s remember when OneWalk inMontréal was a 60-kilometre trek spread across two days. Now it’s 25 kilometres during a single day. Easy for them. Their goal remains the same. Finish the walk, raise as much money as they can for cancer research and try to beat their own personal fundraising total from the previous year. And enjoy meeting old friends and making new ones while they are in town on Aug. 20. “The camaraderie is unreal,” saidMarilyn. “And during the walk itself, you would not believe the number of people who help,” said Michael. “The police cordon off all the streets along the route tomake sure the walkers are safe from traffic.” If the mid-August weather proves to be less than perfect, the way early April has been so far, it won’t stop theMoskau’s.They plan to walk and they will walk no matter what happens. “We’ve walked in the rain, we’ve walked in the sun,” saidMarilyn, smiling. “We’ve even walked in the tail end of a tornado, and we keep coming back.” More details on the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer event, including pledging individuals and teams, is available at www.onewalk. ca, or at mo16.onewalk.ca for the Montreal event. Everyone belongs The Upper Canada District School Board’s social media campaign continues to highlight efforts of students and staff in the district to promote a feeling of community and belonging for all attending local schools. The #SEEMYVOICE awareness campaign wrapped up April 13 as part of the Upper Canada district’s continued efforts to both combat bullying and also help foster inclusion, understanding and appreciation for people from all walks of life as individuals and not stereotypes. The #SEEMYVOICE campaign was scheduled around Canada Pink Shirt Day on Feb. 24 and International Day of Pink on April 13, two days important for the issue of inclu- sion. – Gregg Chamberlain

If everyone involved in the fight to end cancer are as dedicated as Marilyn and Michael Moskau, then the threat of the Big C may become a thing of the past within everyone’s lifetime. The Rockland couple are in training for the One Walk to Conquer Cancer event in Montreal on Aug. 20. The truth is these two have been in training probably every day they’ve been together, because they enjoy doing things as partners and they just cannot help being active. “We bike and we walk,” saidMarilyn, 65. “We’re big bikers. We love that and we love to walk.” “Wherever we travel, we will be walking at some point,” saidMichael, 70. “When you see one of us, you see the other. Travel is one of our big passions.” “We’re always off the beaten track somewhere,” she added, smiling. “And we’re always walking.” The August event theMoskau’s are prepa- ring for will benefit the Segal Cancer Centre at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital. It is part of a global fundraising effort sponsored through several corporations to boost both, support funding and community awareness of research into the various forms of cancer, their causes, treatments, and potential cures. “It’s the eleventh year we’ve been doing

Marilyn andMicheal Moskau enjoy a quiet evening at their Rockland home, as they put upwith the same spring snow storms that seemed to have replaced the traditional April showers around EasternOntario. But rain, sleet, snow, or sunshine, they are getting out and about also for their training schedules, so they are ready tomarch in the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer event in Montréal this summer. —photo Gregg Chamberlain

Baccalaureate program report The Upper Canada District School Board’s inter- national baccalaureate program is proving very successful. District trustees received a highlights report on the program during their March 23 regular meeting. The program offered in the district, through Brockville Collegiate Institute, has international recognition for its emphasis on global issues and extra content beyond what is required for a high school diploma, under the Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma guidelines. Ontario school districts are allowed to offer the baccalaureate program as an enhanced option in addition to the required secondary school curriculum. – Gregg Chamberlain School district vision The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is doing its 2016 UCDSB Program Review and it wants all interested residents iwithin the Upper Canada district to offer feedback to evaluate school curriculums, programs and other setups at UCDSB schools. The UCDSB has an online survey at www. surveymonkey.com/r/ZJTY5RM and has scheduled 10 Family of Schools (FOS) meetings during April and May. For the Prescott-Russell region, the FOS is May 10, 6:30 p.m., at Russell High School in the Village of Russell in Russell Township. – Gregg Chamberlain
