Devotional Message — 2 Timothy 3 :l-5, 14-17 as the theme. Questions fo r Discussion : 1. Do you think modern youth is right or wrong in its approach to such issues as the problem o f authority for conduct, altruism versus “self- expression,” etc.? 2. What tendencies among young peo ple make an approach to the gospel difficult ? 3. Are the churches really helping young people in their spiritual problems ? Conclusion o f M eeting : Quiet Hour. Hymn—“Work, lor the Night is Com- ing.” Benediction—Psalm 19:14. Meditation on the Lesson The great apostle in writing to Timo thy, his son in the gospel, urged the need o f being strong for the Lord. In chapter two o f the second letter to Timothy, we find the Christian compared to a soldier, an athlete, a husbandman, a student, a vessel, and a servant. Along with these figures is a brief and strong characterization of each. Particularly striking are the portions of this lesson which picture the Christian as a soldier, as an athlete, and as a student. These figures refer to young people, and are a stirring challenge and a comprehen sive standard for youth today. What sort of soldier does Christ want a young man to be ? First, he must “ endure hardness as a good soldier” (v. 3). And a life of defi nite testing—perhaps o f actual hardship— faces each young person who would be a “good soldier.” A soldier’s time is entirely given up to military duty. He must not become “entangled” in the affairs of this present existence. “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier” (v. 4). Not occupation with the things o f life, but en tanglement in them is fatal to the possibil ity o f pleasing the Commander. It is remarkable that the experience o f a soldier should be so constantly used to il lustrate the walk o f the servants of the Prince o f Peace. But if we remember that the one great peculiarity of military disci pline is prompt, unquestioning obedience, we will see the reason why Christ said : “Ye are my friends, if we do whatsoever I com mand you.” “ If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” The one true aim of every Christian life should be to please Christ. O f His own re lationship to .the Father, Jesus said : “ I do always those things that please him.” Shall not we show a like eagerness to please the Lord? When we are motivated by this de sire, we have found the secret which will make little things great, and great things small. We shall “labour that, whether pres ent or absent, we may be accepted o f him.” Freedom and happiness, dignity and buoy ancy, all flow from this one transfiguring thought : The one all-sufficient aim for life is to please Christ, the Captain of the Lord’s host. The contending athlete—racer or wres tler—is next figured to represent the Chris tian (2 Tim. 2 :5 ). One who competed in the Olympic games was crowned only if he had followed the regulations appointed for the contest. He must furnish a certifi cate o f Greek birth, undergo prescribed training, and obey the rules of the contest itself. How like this must the Christian be ! Born o f God— “not . . . of the "will of man, but of God”— fulfillment o f that qual ification must come first. The Christian
