MAY 1 God’s Guiding Hand
liberty in service—the love of God shed abroad in our hearts.—E van H. H opkins . MAY 4 The Satisfaction of the Lonely Heart “I am . . . . thy exceeding great re w a r d (Gen. 15:1). Here is a message to those lonely, for saken souls who are tempted to depression and disappointment because the earthly possessions which others enjoy so richly are denied to them. Let the great Friend o f Abram speak to thee in thy loneliness: “I am thy exceeding great reward.” As one has said, “ To have Him is to have all, though bereft o f everything. To be desti tute o f Him is to be bereft o f everything, though having all . . With God as our shield, nothing shall dishearten us or make us fear; and with God as our reward, we shall have need o f nothing, for to all His friends, He says: “ Thou art ever with me and all that I have is thine.” ■—J. G regory M antle . MAY 5 The Law of the Spirit "Ask, and it shall be given you ; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you" (Matt. 7 :7 ). God’s giving is inseparably connected with our asking. He applies this espe cially to the Holy Spirit. As surely as a father on earth gives bread to his child, so God gives the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him. The whole ministration of the Spirit is ruled by the one great law: God must give; we must ask. When the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost with a flow that never ceases, if was in answer to prayer. The inflow into the believer’s heart, and His outflow in the rivers o f living water, ever still depend upon the law;: Ask, and it jshall be given. —A ndrew M urray . MAY 6 Washing in the Water of the Word “ That he might sanctify and cleanse. . . with the washing o f water by the word" (Eph. 5:26). The cleansing water is the Word o f God. W e can find only from Holy Scripture what God’s will for us is, what the true standard of Christian life is, what the things that hinder Christian life are, and how we may enter into the fullness of Christian life. As we study the Word of God, and are obedient to it, so we cleanse ourselves from “ all filthiness "of the flesh and spirit.” I f in our reading o f the Word we are convicted o f some wrong in our life, and we take the matter to God, and tell Him that we will forthwith be done with that thing, we are then cleansing our selves, we are washing in the water o f the Word. The blood-washing can be once only, for the merits of Christ’s blood are forever efficacious and meritorious. But there is a washing in the Word which is continuous, which should be a daily op eration, a daily cleansing, and that is the way o f practical sanctification. ; —W . G raham S croggie .
"Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One o f Israel; I am the Lord thy God . . . which leadeth thee" (Isa. 48:17). Child o f God, the path over which thou art being led may be rough and stony. Willingness to follow the Lord “whither soever he goeth” does not insure ease and comfort. Trudging on in obedience to the known will o f God, thy whole body may be racked with pain and weariness. Art thou giving more attention to thy suffer ings than to the fact that the One who suf fered most is walking by thy side? Hast thou forgotten that there is the pressure of His hand on thine? It is the hand of “thy Redeemer, the Holy One o f Israel, . . . the Lord thy God” that guides thee. Look up unto Him, and rejoice. —A ndrew W ills . And thus I journey on through life, ’Mid pain and pleasure, toil and strife, Christ’s glorious face I long to see, And clasp the hand that’s leading me. —L aura V. C line . MAY 2 The Words of the King “ Then I told them o f . . . the king’s words” (Neh. 2:18). How natural for Nehemiah to tell of the king’s words which he had spoken unto him! . . . Now, ought it not to be just as natural, delightful, and interesting to tell of the words of our own, our heavenly King? . . . The King has gifts for us with shining inscriptions which “no man knoweth saving he that receiveth” them. But perhaps most o f His gracious commu nications to the soul come in the very form which is most easily grasped, remembered, and repeated—His own written words brought to Our remembrance by His good Spirit, and applied to our conscious or un conscious need. Surely there is no more precious talent entrusted to us, none with which we may trade with more certain suc cess and splendid increase, than these words o f our King. What we hear from Him let us commit to others, that they may be able to teach others also. —F rances R idley H avergal . M AY 3 Sonship “ Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). I f you are a believer, take up your place before God as one of His children. Re member, sonship is not an attainment; it belonged to you when you knew the for giveness o f sinsi Take up the place now by faith, for, “ Ye have not received the spirit o f bondage again to fear, but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby ye cry, Abba, Father.” . . . . When the love is shed abroad in your heart, then you love all God’s commands. Look at that mother devoting herself to that sick child. Does she think of what she has to give up, and of what it cost her? No, she loves that child, and that is the secret o f true
