formula is based on two factors: ridership numbers and local population size according to the most recent Statistics Canada census figure. Ridership numbers account for 70 per cent of the final subsidy calculation. Not enough says mayor Any municipality eligible for the Ontario gas tax subsidy must use the money for its public transit program. Clarence-Rockland Mayor Guy Desjardins fears that even with the subsidy, the CRTranspo program may still face a deficit situation for its operation budget this year. “It (subsidy) is still lower that what the buses are costing us,” Desjardins said during a January 9 interview. “The gas tax (subsidy) we’re getting is not covering the deficit we’re running.” The mayor said dealing with a potential public transit deficit situation will be part of this year’s municipal budget discussions. That may mean fare increases, schedule changes, or new ways to promote an increase in the number of riders using CRTranspo.

CRTranspo could have a deficit situation for its operations budget this year and the provincial gas tax allowance isn’t helping enough to prevent that. Last week, Ontario Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek announced the final figures this year for the provincial gas tax subsidies paid out to municipalities that have public transit programs. The City of Clarence-Rockland will receive $245,147 this year as its share of the $364 million in gas tax funding, divided among 107 Ontario municipalities. i8FBSF JOWFTUJOH JOQVCMJD USBOTJU UP make it a more convenient travel option and to attract more riders,” stated Yurek in the ministry news release. “More public transit will cut through gridlock and get people moving.” But Clarence-Rockland’s share of the annual gas tax subsidy is about $2000 less than it received last year. » —photo fournie
