They were life-sized elephant sculptures made from a weed called lantana . The story of these elephants starts in India, where Asian elephants live in the wild. The Asian elephants there are facing a big problem. A weed called lantana is taking over forests. When the lantana plant takes over, there is nothing left for the elephants to eat. People living near these elephants wanted to help them. A Growing Problem O n July 4, 2024, in Newport, Rhode Island, something unusual happened: A herd of 100 very interesting elephants showed up.

A Creative Idea

Back to America

Dr. Tarsh Thekaekarais came up with an idea to turn the nasty weed into something beautiful. He worked with local artists to use the weed to make life-sized elephant sculptures. His project removes the lantana from the forest, too. Making the sculptures are good, well- paying jobs for people living in the area. “It’s a win-win for both people and nature,”

One hundred of the lantana elephants started their trip, or migration , across the United States in Rhode Island. The elephants visited eight places. They ended their trip in Livermore, California, in October of 2026. Look at the map to see all the places the elephants visited.
