Between 1976 and 1978, the method of choosing the World Champion Barrel Racer was changed to coincide with the method used by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The 15 barrel rac- ers with the top earnings during the regular season qualified for the National Finals Rodeo, then held in Oklahoma City. The barrel racer who won the most money at the NFR alone was named the world cham- pion. During the years this system was in use, the NFR champion was always different from the high money winner for the year. Before 1976 and since 1979, the world champion has been determined by total season earnings, including both regular-season and NFR earn- ings. 1978 World Standings (NFR Only) 1.
