GENERAL • To develop and implement a culture (including policies and procedures) that promotes equality and values diversity and inclusion. • Supports the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working. • To complete any other duties commensurate with the role at the request of the Director of Campus Services. • The Head of Community Safety, Security and Emergency Planning will be expected to join the Association of University Chief Security officers (AUCSO).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

KNOWLEDGE

• Extensive relevant professional experience at a senior level in Security or related Operational Management. • Demonstrable evidence and understanding of Emergency Planning and Criminal Law, including Human Rights Act 1998. • Strong technical knowledge of safety and security systems and associated legislation.

This is a high profile, strategic position which requires a candidate of gravitas and high calibre who responds confidently and effectively in a challenging environment. A person who listens effectively, challenges assumptions, and acts on well-founded feedback with a willingness to learn and change. The successful individual will be motivated and able to inspire confidence and demonstrate clear leadership in their team. They will have the courage and decisiveness to make difficult decisions; and will have the knowledge, ability, and commitment to implement ‘best practices’ within the Community Safety and Security service, thus developing a culture and service that delivers. With responsibility for protecting the Campus and Community, the successful candidate must be able to gather, develop, and assess information and intelligence. When unplanned incidents and emergencies occur, this person must be decisive and capable to manage complex and developing situations, thinking ahead, and providing briefing and assessment as matters can escalate. They must have or be able to develop a network of contacts within the Emergency Services, Professional bodies, and in the various fields of Security, Threat and Risk Management. Overall being able to inform, alert and advise on current matters of threat and vulnerability. When working with senior colleagues in Professional Services and Colleges, this person will be flexible in approach seeking to enable and support other’s objectives, whilst being able to negotiate and influence on Community Safety and Security requirements. Within Campus Services the person must be a team player and enable Campus wide business and operations, often working with peers to deliver on large scale events and projects.

• Able to demonstrate strong strategic management and leadership skills, flexibility of approach and ability to constantly re-evaluate competing priorities. • Self-confident and articulate. • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff; give presentations, chair meetings, and write concise, reasoned reports for senior management. • Ability to communicate in difficult circumstances and to stay calm during a crisis.
